WHAT’S A QR
CODE?
Overview of QR Code
QUICK RESPONSE (QR) CODE
A QR Code is a matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by
QR scanners, mobile phones with a camera, and smartphones. The code consists
of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The
information encoded can be text, URL or other data.
■ It is a mobile phone readable barcode
■ Developed by a Japanese corporation (Denso-
Wave) and released in 1994

QR Codes and 2D Codes

OTHER
TYPES OF
2D CODE
Although QR Codes tend to be the most
popular of the 2D Codes it’s good to be
aware of other types.

FEATURES
In Brief
High Capacity Encoding of Data
QR code can handle all types of data, such
as numeric and alphabetic characters
Up to 7,089 characters can be encoded in
one symbol.
Small Printout Size
QR encoding the same amount of data in
approximately one-tenth the space of a
traditional bar code. (For a smaller printout
size, Micro QR Code is available.
Readable from any direction in 360°
It is capable of 360 degree (Omni-
directional), high speed reading.
Dirt and Damage Resistant
It has error correction capability. Data can be
restored even if the symbol is partially dirty or
damaged. A maximum 30% of codeword's
can be restored.
Data Density greater than Barcode
QR code contains information in both the
vertical and horizontal directions, whereas a
bar code contains data in one direction only.

ENCODING
DATA
The black modules of the QR Code contain
encoded data such as:
• Text
• URL
• vCard
• Phone number
• Text (SMS)
• Email Address
• Email Message
• Event
• Google Maps Location
• Social Media
• YouTube Video

DESCRIPTION
REQUIREMENTS
Hardware and Software
Hardware
■ Any cell phone with a camera and the ability to install software that can interpret
the code.
■ What the device can do with the resulting data will vary depending on the
devices other features. (i.e. Internet connection)
QR CODE
READERS
There are a number of QR Code reader
apps available for smart phones such as:
•Kaywa
•i-nigma
•Optiscan
•QuickMark
•QR Droid
•ScanLife
•Barcode Scanner (Android)
•Quickmark (iPhone)
•BeeTagg QR Code Reader (Windows
Phone and Blackberry)
•UpCode (Blackberry)

MARKETING &
ADAPTATION
Usage statistics
COMMON MARKETING USES OF
QR CODES
■ URL
– Provide additional content specific to the scanned item or location such as:
■ Video describing or demoing an item
■ Additional content about the item (i.e.: reviews, rating)
■ Phone number
– Speak to a representative
■ Text
– Receive additional information
– Sign up for an offer
2D CODE USAGE STATISTICS
■ 28% of smart phone users are already scanning 2D codes.
■ Percentage of users scanning 2D codes by type of smart phone:
– 48% Android
– 39% iPhone
– 18% Blackberry
WRAPPING IT UP
Advantage
■ QR codes can be scanned
anytime, anywhere with mobile
phones
■ Quick response through QR
codes.
■ Multiple uses of these codes
Disadvantages
■ Users must be equipped with a
camera phone and the correct
reader software that can scan the
image of the QR Code. Currently
only Smartphone’s are technically
equipped to do this.
■ Many users that have mobile
phones that have cameras are
unable to get QR reading software
for their phones.
