The "QR" is derived from
"Quick Response" because the
code contents can be decoded
        at high speed
QR Codes were originally used to
                                   track parts in vehicle manufacturing

A QR Code is essentially a fancier
“Barcode” that can hold more information
Old barcode New Fancy barcode

                 vs.
For example, a 1-dimensional UPC code
can encode 12 digits for a computer to scan
Whereas a 2 dimensional QR Code can
encode 7000 numbers or 4000 characters!
Now that everyone has a small computer in the
palm of their hands, QR Codes are now being
used conveniently by mobile phone users
