Frequently Asked Questions About QR Tags Where does the name “QR” come from? What are QR Codes? QR Codes are essentially two-dimensional barcodes that are designed to decode information at very high speeds. “ QR” is an acronym which stands for “quick response.” They were named “QR Codes” because they were intended to decode the contents of the codes quickly. How did QR codes come about? QR Codes were created by the  Japanese company Denso Wave. They  realized that there needed to be an  improvement to the average barcode  so that more data could be stored.  What were QR codes originally used for? QR Codes were originally used by motor vehicle manufacturers to track parts.  What makes QR codes different from standard bar codes? The most obvious difference is that bar codes only encode horizontally while QR codes encode both horizontally and vertically. Barcodes can only hold 20 digits while QR codes can store up to 7,089 characters. How do QR codes work? QR Codes are usually scanned by the cameras on smart phones. The codes  are then decoded using software  installed on the phone. Once  decoded, the information appears in  a matter of seconds. What can QR codes be used for? There are so many uses for QR Codes some uses include: Opening a website Displaying plain text Dialing or opening a phone number Giving an e-mail address Why use QR codes? There are approximately 53 million smart phone users in the United States, each of which have the ability to read QR codes. By using QR codes, which are free, we can get our information across to a large amount of people. Why use QR codes? Integrating QR Codes into our herbarium could be very beneficial. Having QR Codes integrated into our herbarium would allow us to provide even more information to the general public by  taking them directly to our website. How can we use QR tags in our herbarium? We already began putting QR tags on our labels. The code will take you to the page we have dedicated to that species of plant. We could also, with permission from the National Park Service, could put QR codes around Sandy Hook near the plants so the public could access the information they want without even visiting the herbarium. 1.
