This document summarizes Viber's migration from a second generation database architecture using MongoDB and Redis to a third generation architecture using Couchbase. The migration involved a staged process to add the Couchbase clusters in parallel, migrate data from MongoDB to Couchbase without downtime or data loss, and eventually remove MongoDB. The new Couchbase architecture provides better performance, scalability and robustness to support Viber's growth to over 400 million users conducting billions of messages and call minutes daily.
