Article summary:
Connection of a Raspberry Pi board is still in fuzzy state when there is a need
of connecting with our laptop. However Raspberry pi board has HDMI port for video o/p.
carrying a HDMI monitor on the go is a troublesome task. So connecting a laptop is quite facile.
But, Laptop monitor, Keyboard, Mouse and other o/p ports says that Laptop is the input which
gives the output for other axillary peripherals. But here the case is that Raspberry pi board is the
input and the laptop should act as the output device which includes keyboard, mouse and the
monitor. This article will makes you clear to how to use the laptop as the output peripheral.
Introduction to Raspberry Pi:
Raspberry pi is a sublime platform to learn programming and to understand
the working process of any engineering software and how the hardware is controlled by the
software thus returned for the specific application. Raspberry pi initially introduced into the
market by Feb 2012 by Raspberry pi foundation. It’s a single board computer (i.e.) the full
arrangement of a computer is been assembled on a chip. Unlike Arduino, Raspberry can be
connected and controlled wirelessly. The first model of Raspberry is Model-A (RAM 256MB)
followed by Model-B (RAM 512MB) and the Model-B+ is the latest version with some weeny
advances in USB ports and Micro SD.
Installing OS:
Download the OS image file from the official link
www.raspberrypi.org/downloads. Here’s the steps how to install the OS once after downloading
the OS file.
1. Insert the SD card in which the OS to be installed.
2. Download win32DiskImager.
3. Extract the executables from the zip file and run the Win32DiskImager (Run
Win32DiskImager in administrator).
4. Select the image file that to be installed.
5. Select the drive for installing. Choose the drive correctly. Wrong drive selection will
damage the data in computer local hard disk.
6. Click write and wait till the write to complete.
7. Exit the imager and eject the SD card.
Required Software:
1. Raspberry Pi with OS installed.
2. Putty (For SSH).
3. Xming (For virtual monitor on the laptop screen).
4. netGEAR Genie (For analysing the networks that are in active).
Procedure:
1. Power up the Raspberry pi.
2. Connect the Ethernet cable from the raspberry pi to the network modem.
3. Take another Ethernet cable and connect the laptop and the same network modem (Two
Ethernet cables are needed).
4. Open netGEAR Genie third party software and get the IP address of the raspberry pi and
the local area network.
5. IP address can also be fetched by the following steps,
a) Press Windows + R
b) Type CMD
c) Type IPCONFIG in the command prompt
d) Note down the IP address of the local area and the Raspberry
Pi. (IP will be under Ethernet adapter Ethernet)
6. Open Putty software.
7. Enter the IP address in the host name block.
8. Set the port to be 22 (Default putty port).
9. Go to category and select SSH  X11  Enable X11 forwarding.
10. Press open.
11. Putty command line will be opened.
12. Type user name and password of the raspberry. User name  pi ; Password  raspberry
(Default)
13. Then start Xming software (Installation of Xming should be done before starting Xming).
14. Type lxsession in the putty command prompt where previous command been given.
15. Now the raspberry window will be opened on your windows screen.
LED Status of Raspberry Pi:
LED Colour Indication Brief
Green ACT SD card is accessed.
Red PWR 3.3v power reached.
Green FDX/LNK Network activity.
Yellow 100 Network connection is
100Mbps
Initial Raspberry configuration:
1. Open LXTerminal (Raspberry welcome window).
2. Type  raspi-config.
3. Expand rootfs : Enable.
4. Overscan : Disable.
5. Password: Password can be changed as per user requirement.
6. Memory split: Default.
7. SSH: Enable.
Start-up command:
Raspberry pi login  User name: Pi
Password: raspberry
pi@raspberrypi ~$ startx
Shut-down command:
pi@raspberrypi ~$ sudo shutdown –h now
Shut-down command should be given before shutdown of the raspberry, If not sudden power
turn off will damage the pi board.
