 Strategies for reading
 How do we know which strategy?
 Unfamiliar words
Look at the images below.
What are they?
Before reading
The images of the previous slide were pictures, title, headings and contact information.
They are all part of a text and can tell us a great deal about the text we have not read yet.
 Go back to the and see what you can figure out about the text.
Without reading the text you can tell that the text is about:
 ..a kitchen where they make and sell fudge.
 ..the owner will say something.
 ..how to make fudge.
 ..being able to contact the kitchen.
Before reading
1. Look at the title of the text.
2. Look at the pictures of the text.
3. Look at the headings (the sentences that are in cursive, bold, or bigger).
4. Look at the assignment that belongs to a certain part of the text. Decide on a strategy for
reading.
Strategies for reading
1. Skim: skim the text quickly to get a general idea of the text.
2. Scan: scan for specific information.
3. Extensive reading: word for word, line for line reading of the text.
How do you know which strategy?
Well that depends on the assignment.
With questions about the whole text you SKIM. You look for clues to the answer.
How do you know which strategy?
With questions where specific information is requested, you SCAN.
If for instance, a certain amount (money) is requested, you scan for numbers.
 34. You have bought fudge from ‘Jim Garragy’s Fudge Kitchen’.
  Which two do you have to do with the fudge if you want to keep the fudge longer than
ten days?
You scan for the words ‘ten’ and ‘days’.
How do you know which strategy?
If there are line numbers in a question, you are often expected to read the WHOLE paragraph
extensively.
The paragraph starts at line 42 and ends at line 60. Read the whole paragraph!
How do you know which strategy?
Multiple choice questions usually come in order of the text.
1. Read the question and the part of the text where you think the answer lies.
2. Try to answer the question without seeing the multiple choice answers.
3. Compare your answer with the multiple choice answers.
4. Choose the option that comes closest to your answer.
If you’re still unsure, repeat the process.
Unfamiliar words
You will come accross words that you don’t know the meaning of.
This doesn’t have to be a problem. And you don’t always have to look them up in a dictionary.
There are ways to understand the role of aword in the text, without a dictionary:
1. Try guessing the meaning of the word by reading the whole sentence, sentences before and
after. The meaning might become clear in context.
2. Languages are part of a language family. See if the word looks like a word in another language.
For instance Dutch or French.
3. If you still do not know the meaning, look it up in a dictionary and write it down. How you look
up words in a dictionary is in another presentation.
