- 5. SIGNALS There are two types of signals to transfer data. 5
- 6. ANALOG SIGNALS An analog signal is a continuous wave denoted by a sine wave and may vary in signal strength (amplitude) or frequency (waves per unit time). 6

- 8. DIGITAL SIGNALS A digital signal can have only a limited number of defined values. Although each value can be any number it is as simple as 1 and 0. 8

- 11. SIMPLEX 11 •Data is directed one way only. •There is no any space for data transmission to be directed the other way. Examples: Radio transmission. From your computer to the printer. From the mouse to your computer.
- 12. 12 HALF DUPLEX •Data can be directed one way at a time. The data flows in one direction or the other, but not both at the same time. Example: Walkie-talkie.
- 13. 13 DUPLEX Data can be transmitted both ways at a time. Example: Telephone.
- 14. Transmission media is a pathway that carries the information from sender to receiver. We use different types of cables or waves to transmit data. Data is transmitted normally through electrical or electromagnetic signals TRANSMISSION MEDIUM 14
- 15. GUIDED MEDIA Twisted pair is the ordinary copper wire that connects home and many business computers to the telephone company. To reduce crosstalk or electromagnetic induction between pairs of wires, two insulated copper wires are twisted around each other. Twisted pair: 15
- 16. COAXIAL CABLE Coaxial cable is a type of copper cable specially built with a metal shield and other components engineered to block signal interference. It is primarily used by cable TV companies to connect their satellite antenna facilities to customer homes and businesses. GUIDED MEDIA 16
- 17. UNGUIDED MEDIA RADIO WAVES Radio waves are the electromagnetic waves that are transmitted in all the directions of free space. The range in frequencies of radio waves is from 3Khz to 1 khz. In the case of radio waves, the sending and receiving antenna are not aligned, i.e., the wave sent by the sending antenna can be received by any receiving antenna. n example of the radio wave is FM radio 17

Unguided Media Satellite Microwave Communication •A satellite is a physical object that revolves around the earth at a known height. •Satellite communication is more reliable nowadays as it offers more flexibility than cable and fiber optic systems. •We can communicate with any point on the globe by using satellite communication. 18
