Record Labels and Permissions
By Farida Islam
• After an act is signed by a record label they're put into a studio to create
music, the record label then starts to create copies of the finished
product. They then distribute copies of the album/single and begin to
promote it to the audience. For example the record label organises
interviews for the act on TV, radio, online websites, magazine etc.
• A record label:
-coordinates the production, manufacture and distribution of music
-markets and promotes artist/song
-enforces copyright of song and music videos
-conducts talent scouting and development of new artists
-maintains contracts with artists and their managers
• My artist would be signed to a major label, as she is a pop artist and fairly
mainstream several similar artists are on major labels also.
• I think that my artist would be most suited to Epic Records as it has similar
artists signed to it and is an artistic freedom label.
• Epic Records is a subsidiary of the conglomerate Sony Music
Entertainment. It was first launched in 1953 by CBS records, it marketed
jazz, pop, and classical music that didn’t fit in with the mainstream
Columbia Records. By the 1960s the label expanded to a variety of genres.
Epic Records have signed artists such as Avril Lavigne, Andre3000, Cher
Lloyd, Karmin, Natasha Bedingfield, Sara Bareilles, The Fray, The Script
etc. Presently Epic Records has a very broad genre based music label.
• Copyright is given to the creator of 'original work' it is an exclusive right
of protection. Copyright protection is given to the authors of 'original
works of authorship', including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and
other works. This protection covers both published and unpublished
work. The record label enforces the protection of songs and music
videos .
• I can avoid copyright issues by giving full credit to the original artist and
record label. Also by asking permission from the record label if I can use
the song for my own creative purposes. I am not allowed to take full
credit of the song otherwise I would be breaching the copyright law.
• I am going to create and add my record label logo onto my digipak and
advert. Also I will include a copyright symbol so it is then protected by
the law.
