Reflection
Saphara Zavala English 2311-020
Abilities before and after 2311
• Insecure about group projects
• Inability to create a presentable
resume, cover letter, and thank you
letter.
• Average presenter
• No knowledge of the elements of
design
• Strong group member
• Ability to communicate with future
employers
• Experience in technical edits to
present to colleagues
• Gained experience by presenting to
people beyond the classroom.
Communicating with employers
• In this unit there were concepts that
related to how to write your resume.
• I learned that an employer typically
looks at your resume in a “F” shape.
• Also there are 3 ways to lay out your
resume ( Chronological, Functional,
and Chrono-functional)
• Another aspect with communicating
with an employer was to show
persistence, and let them know why
you are qualified for the job.
• I wrote my resume using the Chrono-
functional layout. I wanted a certified
nurse’s job and relayed my customer
service experience as well as hospital
volunteer hours, due to the fact that I
had no experience.
• In my thank you letter I implied that if
I did not hear from the employer, I
would call the employer in two weeks
to set up a interview.
• From taking course concepts and
changing my whole resume and
creating a cover letter, I ended up
receiving a CNA job!
Storyboarding & Design
• In my group project before we could
know how to create a visual instruction
set we had to plan it out using a story
board and learning aspects of design.
• I learned about the “rule of thirds”.
Which is an imaginary grid you can
place on the presentation or design
and it creates an equal balance of what
your looking at.
• I reviewed a video called “the black
hole” and created a storyboard from
what I was viewing to learn how to
split the scenes up to comprehend
what I was going to do for my
storyboard.
• As a group the storyboard helped us
figure out where we were going to
shoot, how long we wanted the camera
to stay in that scene, and the dialogue
in each scene.
• For the visual design we did not use
until we edited the video, and prepared
a Prezi for our instructor and
colleagues.
• While editing the video it was
complicated to change the speed, the
tone of voice, and adding subtitles.
Instead me and other member created
a transcript in the description box
under the uploaded video on YouTube.
Usability Testing
• For this unit I learned when creating a
visual it needed be easily accessed and
easy to follow along with.
• A usability test was needed in our
group to test our video instruction set
on how to access the learning center.
• The usability test helped the group by
determining what factors of our video
helped the viewer understand how to
access the learning center.
• With our video we included a visual
screen play of signs in Holden Hall
that tells you the room number inside
a arrow in the hallway.
• During the testing we recorded
feedback from the person watching our
instruction set.
• This helped our group make changes to
the video, and post it to YouTube for
better access
Documenting Procedures
• Before working with a group I learned
about the mature process.
• The mature process gave us titles
which group members would hold and
carry out upon completion of the
project
• With the titles there was a TOR
document which explained our job
duties and what would happen upon
conflict
• Another document in this until was
our proposal which is a guideline and
solution to the problem we are trying
to solve.
• I learned that you can always
reference the TOR if conflicts arise in
the group. With my group a conflict did
arise and my instructor referenced the
groups TOR, so that I would
understand my job as the writer in the
group.
• With the proposal it gave me a better
idea as to what needed to be done and
what problems we needed to identify to
successfully introduce a visual
instruction set.
Presentation
• For the presentation I learned that the
presentation portion is a “show” it has
to be short sentences or a single word.
• I learned how to make the visual
presentation appealing to the
audience.
• I learned how that the process from
which you start until finish helps the
presenter.
• On my group’s Prezi we had list and
facts more than just plain sentences.
• As a group we had to reach ten
minutes so each of us talking a certain
amount heavily weighted on the total
minutes.
• At first I was really hesitant before
talking but on presentation day, the
words just naturally flowed.
• With the proposal, rough draft, and
video upload it was easier to present
our solution to the problem.
Conclusion
• Everything I learned from this class can aid in projects I want to introduce to future
employers or to communicate with employers in a real world setting.
• Some tips I would like to introduce to future students of 2311, would be to take
everything this class has to offer and remember the ways in which you can be a better
communicator in a professional setting.
• A lot of information you learn from the class will help you not only in a job setting, but
in your other classes too.
• I personally have become a better writer, and a better group member because each
week or every other week as a group there had to be documentation of who is doing
what, and how much time we were putting into the project. It provided the group with
“insurance” just in case there was conflict.
