CONDITIONALS
REGRETS
We can use 'should have or ought to have'
to talk about past events that did not
happen.
We can also use 'should have or ought to
have ' to speculate about events that may or
may not have happened.
We can use 'shouldn’t have' to speculate
negatively about what may or may not have
REGRETS
Structure:
Should have / ought to have + verb
past participle
Example:
I should have been more responsible
with my duties.
CONDITIONALS
 1st
conditional: real situation or
possibility in the present or the future.
Structure:
if + present simple , future Will
Example:
If I practice the piano every day, I will
be a great pianist someday.
CONDITIONALS
 2nd
conditional: unreal situation or
imaginary situation.
Structure:
if + past simple , would + verb inf
Example:
If I were you, I would talk less.
CONDITIONALS
 3rd
conditional: impossible situation,
because it can’t be changed.
Structure:
if + past perfect , would have + v.p.p.
Example:
If we hadn´t done exercise, we would
have gotten fat.
CONDITIONAL LINKERS
We normally use If to introduce a conditional
clause. But we can also use other words.
Unless: if not
Ex: I’ll go to the beach tomorrow unless it rains.
As long as: if (the same meaning)
Ex: It´s safe to visit most parts of Asia as long
as you don’t drink tap water.
Provided (that): if (the same meaning)
Ex: Anybody can travel to the U.S. provided
they have a valid passport.
