- 1. RESEARCH TASK 2C: ANALYSIS OF DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
- 2. Main Image The main image is seen in half of the double page spread and anchors the article. Dizzee rascal is seen in a medium shot however does not use direct address, this entices the audience to know what he is looking at and adds a sense of mystery and rebellion to the double page spread. Dizzee’s body language and clothing also connotes young, unique lookings, however stereotypically aiming towards those who like rap and have an interest in this type of fashion. However, this also attracts those who ae not interested as the celebrity endorsement promotes this fashion sense and may encourage fans to copy his choice of clothing. His clothes also follow the colour scheme of the magazine NME itself, creating a positive vibe for the magazine is Dizzee is wearing their colours. The mise-en-scene which can be seen behind the model shows more graffiti likewise to the front cover; again making it relatable to the young target audience. By using graffiti it adds excitement to th target audience due to something they are likely to be interested or encouraged by.
- 3. Smaller Image/Props The smaller images show empty beer bottles and a radio placed. This helps associate with the target audience as teenagers/young adults are stereotypically known for heavy drinking and playing extremely loud music. This then creates a relationship between the artist, target audience and magazine itself due to being able to relate to each other and NME using specific features to engage the audience. Drop capital A drop capital is used in order to draw attention to the article from the reader. The large capital starts the article, creating excitement and dramatic affects for the target audience encouraging them to read on. This is a convention which most magazines would use as this is a feature that helps gain attention of the reader.
- 4. Headline The headline which is used with the double page spread “From Tags to Riches” is a play on words from the phrase ‘from rags to richies’. This is a denotation explaining that the article will be able Dizzee Rascal looking back on his life. Tagging is something which is stereotypically associated with young people and is something which they would understand, for this reason it has been included in thr main headline as this will attract the reader. Both the words ‘tags’ and ‘riches’ are seen in larger font, showing the emphasis on the word meaning and showing the impact on Dizzees life from start to finish. The headline could also be an encouragement of the young audience that anything is possible, making them likely to want to read how Dizzee did this creating an iconic feel.
- 5. Layout The layout of the magazine shows the main image being placed on one side, with the article on the other, including 4 columns of writing. This is a typical convention of magazine, and the clear structure allows the reader to understand and enjoy the article without any issues. We are also able to see the date, masthead and issue number this shows consistency throughout the magazine. This makes the reader feel they reading a professional magazine which is well organised and efficient.
