Editor's Notes

  • #6: FIRST BUILD Some enterprises take a single-vendor approach to virus scanning. This means they will have one vendor scan engine throughout their entire environment – at the gateway, on their mail servers, on their desktop. This is not a best-practices approach and leads to potential vulnerabilities. If that one antivirus lab happens to miss a virus or react slowly to a new outbreak, there is no other protection in the entire enterprise. This means the virus can gain entry via the gateway, infect mailboxes via the mail server, and infect desktops via the mail client. In short order the virus can infect wide portions of the enterprise. SECOND BUILD To protect against this, most industry analysts recommend a layered defense approach, which uses different scanning technologies at different levels. For instance, one vender at the gateway, one on the mail stores and a third on the desktop. The problem with this approach is that it is costly, complex and difficult to manage.
  • #7: Antigen combines the efficacy of a multi-layered defense with the ease of use and cost efficiencies of a single vendor solution. It does this by integrating multiple antivirus engines from top worldwide virus labs into a single product, and provides all updates from a single source. This multiple engine approach is available across all the Antigen products. In addition to antivirus, Antigen solutions include anti-spam, content filtering for complete messaging hygiene.
  • #8: This slide shows the order in which filters are applied. Spam is filtered out first. Because the volume of spam is so high, it is good to remove it as soon as possible in the scanning process. This takes a lot of the load off the remaining scanning jobs. Spam scans are also quite fast. Content filtering is next. Then attachments are scanned for viruses. The most performance intensive scans – keyword and full body virus scanning – are kept to the end (so these scans aren’t wasting processes on messages already determined to be “bad”).
  • #9: Antigen can also provide anti-spam protection with Advanced Spam Manager. This uses a spam-specific engine from MailFilters called the SpamCure engine. It is a signature based engine which provides very accurate detection of spam messages. The SpamCure engine can be used in conjunction with the Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) provided in Exchange 2003. In addition to the SpamCure engine, additional spam protection can be provided by creating specific sender, domain and IP address block lists (functionality we just covered in the filtering section of this presentation). Advanced Spam Manager is available as an option within Antigen or as a stand-alone product without antivirus engines.
  • #11: The SpamCure engine technology is the most powerful spam fighting technology in Advanced Spam Manager, and consists of two parts. The StarEngine is used to normalize email. Spammers try to hide their presence by putting many random comments into the HTML code of their spam messages. The STAR engine strips out the garbage characters, allowing SpamCure to identify the message. RUN BUILD Once the message is normalized, it is compared to the entries in the Bullet Signature Database, which contains the spam signatures. The Bullet database is created by a team of human spam editors at MailFilters who created very specific targeted signatures that accurately detect spam. Because the signatures are very specific, the level of false positives is very low.
