Some Reasons for Resigning?
No need to feel guilty this happens all the time…
• Work location is too far from home
• Better opportunity came up
• Salary and benefits were not satisfactory
• Continuance of education
• Maternity leave
• Personal last minute resignation
• You plainly don’t like your job or boss
• Change in career paths all together
5
Ms. Karabelas - '09
WARNING!!!!!
***If you happen to leave due to bad
circumstances and want to sue your employer
(for example-sexual harassment), you should
consult your lawyer BEFORE you SAY or DO
anything!
6
Ms. Karabelas - '09
Pay Careful Attention to ..
• Never leave on bad terms
• Be certain about your reasons for leaving
• Give enough notice to your supervisor (at least 2-4 weeks -but consult
your employee handbook in case they expect more)
• Offer to help your current employer find your replacement (whatever will
make this transition easier)
• You must work devotedly until the very last day
• Before walking out make sure you have key contact information of
supervisors and co-workers for your references/contact list..and be sure
you thank them for their help and support
• Keep your story straight! Rumor travels fast in a work place!!!
7
Ms. Karabelas - '09
When and How do I do it?!?!?
Ask your employer or appropriate supervisor for a meeting in
his/her office. (Think about what you will say to them before doing this)
Announce or confirm your resignation. You then can offer
your letter of resignation at the end of the meeting.
Remember to be:
-Calm
-Professional
-Positive
-Brief
The announcement meeting, letter, and how you function in the company from the
time of your announcement to the time you leave will form a lasting impression.
8
Ms. Karabelas - '09
What to be ready for after you
announce your resignation?
• You may be asked to be escorted out of the building ASAP
• Make sure you copy and remove your personal files and
software from your computer. Remove personal belongings
and information and get your workspace organized.
• Guilt from co-workers or your boss & GOSSIP
• A counter-offer to entice you to stay (BEWARE) 75% of
employees who accept counter-offers are no longer there 6 months later!
• An exit interview – be careful and professional (BEWARE)
9
Ms. Karabelas - '09
What do I include in the letter?
• 1st Paragraph
State your intention of leaving the company, which position you
currently attain, and when your exact date of departure will be.
• 2nd Paragraph
If you feel comfortable give a reason why you are leaving. To leave
on a good note, compliment or refer to a positive that your current
job experience has given you.
• 3rd Paragraph
Thank your supervisors and the company and end
with a good will statement.

**A VERY PROFESSIONAL LETTER**
March 25, 2009
Suzy Jones
ABC Company
12345 South Road
Mason, IL 60225
Dear Ms. Jones:
After a considerable amount of thought and careful consideration, I have decided to pursue a
different career and resign from my position as Software Engineer with ABC Company. Following
with company policy, I am giving you a full month’s notice that my last day will be April 25, 2009.
I want to stress that my decision to follow a different career path has nothing to do with my
experiences at ABC Company. I have gained countless work experiences and a great deal of
knowledge at this company, and I am very grateful for the opportunity I had to work here, in
addition to the many friendships that I have gained. I would recommend this company highly to
anyone searching for a career in Software Engineering.
If there is anything I can do to make my last weeks here more productive, I would be glad to honor
any suggestions you might have. Thank you again for the opportunity to work at such a wonderful
company.
Sincerely,
(your signature)

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Here is a list of some of the written “assignments” you will need to complete before, during, or after your job search. There is a reason why English skills are so important, hence taking many English courses during high school…no matter what/for the rest of your life…you will NEED to read, write, and speak. Doing these well will help you along your way, and perhaps open some doors for you. The way you communicate is proof of your professionalism Remember the way you speak, write, and present yourself reflects who you are and how you will be on the job.
  • #3: Read the slide Take note that one of the English vocabulary/reading comprehensive strategies is to try to find the “hidden” or “embedded” word within a complicated term and to try to guess the meaning of that word NOTICE  resignation  resign  which means to leave/quit/give up
  • #4: * Just read the slide
  • #5: * Just read the slide
  • #6: * Just read the slide.
  • #7: Pay attention to this slide America has become super “suing obsessed” – People will do ANYTHING for money…be careful with what you SAY and what you WRITE about anything or anyone. A lot of workplace “tap” phones, and spy on your computer as you work on it. Yes they can do that It is company property & you are on company time
  • #8: Read the slide. Some workplaces may require a “damage to company” fee that you will need to pay them if you quit and break a contract (this may even be thousands of dollars) You will be under a microscope. Be courteous and careful to leave on good terms…you never know when you will need anyone from there again!
  • #9: Try not to “weasel” your way out of this situation Be mature about it and responsible Talking face to face is always best – this way you avoid the chance of miscommunication that occurs through emails
  • #10: Again, you are under a microscope Once you have voiced your intentions you are already on their bad (keeping a watchful eye on you) list It usually suddenly becomes a Me against YOU situation…new found kindness should be interpreted cautiously
  • #11: *Just read the slide.
  • #12: This letter is a GENERAL reason letter Notice it is short, sweet, and to the point
  • #13: *This is a way to word it if you are leaving a job because you found a better position *This situation gets sticky and sensitive real quickly (especially if you formed relationships with your current workplace members)
  • #14: *This letter is if you MUST leave immediately. *It is NOT recommended you leave without a notice of at least 2 weeks, but sometimes you are left with no choice
  • #15: *This is an apologetic resignation letter. *Again, this is not the ONLY way to word these situations, but notice the language is very carefully crafted and kind *You have to ALWAYS be thankful that you were given a job opportunity. Especially in this economy, it is becoming a PRIVILEGE to get a job. *Keep in mind your workplace has spent time and money on hiring you. By you leaving them, is almost like they have invested in a pointless cause. *There will be some sensitivity there.
  • #16: This is your Master PROFESSIONALLY crafted letter. It is a very thorough letter that “Has It All”. This is what you should strive for. It is a bit longer, but the much shorter ones reveal a sense of “I don’t care- I’m out of here” vibe.
  • #17: * PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THIS SLIDE!!!!
  • #18: *Just a quick review on how to address a letter. Working with email so much, we tend to forget the basics. Also, typing a resignation letter and mailing it, is much better than a quick email.
