1. No contractions
• It is a formal essay. You do not shorten words
• Don’t = do not
• Can’t = cannot
• Isn’t = is not
• It’s = it is
2. Informal language
• ‘…therefore she is an angel of some sorts’
• ‘…she doesn’t really know what to say after all that’
• ‘The word ‘holy’ itself shouts to me that...’
• These are sentences that would work when spoken, not written.
Make sure you read your work back and check that it is acceptable in
written form
3. Write in the third person
A. I know this from the phrase ‘holy shrine’
B. Juliet is seen as an extremely powerful figure because of the phrase
‘holy shrine’

4. Identify word classes correctly
• Noun

5. Embed quotes
• Including the phrase/quote into the sentence

1. Use an introductory or explanatory phrase, but not a complete sentence,
separated from the quotation with a comma

2. Make the quotation part of your own sentence without any punctuation.
