Rectangular Prisms What they are:
What they are: Rectangular prisms are 3 dimensional rectangles as opposed to 2 dimensional These are 2D rectangles: This is a 3D rectangular prism :
Some examples of rectangular prisms might be: A shoe box: a computer:
Area of Rectangular Prisms Calculating the surface area of a rectangular prism is really simple: All you have to remember is the formula Area =2(lxw)+2(wxh)+2(hxl) L=length W=width H=height length width height
Some examples Solving some examples: Lets say a rectangular prism has a length of 10cm, a width of 5cm, and a height of 4cm. You can easily solve the question using the formula: Area=2(10x5)+2(5x4)+2(4x10) Area=2(50)+2(20)+2(40) Area=100+40+80=220cm ²
Another Example A Rectangular prism has: Length=3,Width=5, Height=4. Now just use the formula Area=2(3x5)+2(5x4)+2(4x3) Area=2(15)+2(20)+2(12) Area=30+40+24=94 ²
