- 4. Page 4 Why Accessible? ● Beers, Babies, and Echoes – Closed captioning, curb-cuts & ramps, voice assist devices – All brought to market due to accessibility needs. All benefit everyone ● A fully accessible file is just plain better ● Redheads and Lefties – There are more blind people than there are people with red hair – There are more people with dyslexia than people who are left handed – These are large markets going unserved if content is not accessible.

Page 5 Why Accessible? ● Policy issues – Many organizations are adding accessibility across the whole firm • Web design • Product features • Even manuals and help screens ● Legal issues – US • 508/ADA compliance • Last year’s 6th Circuit Federal Court ruling • Duke University Sued – Europe • European Accessibility Act

Page 6 A few minutes on Benetech ● 20 year old charity focused on using technology for the Social Good ● We have a variety of Social Justice programs ● Our largest program is global literacy ● Making eBooks available to people with print disabilities ● Some information about Bookshare – Almost 1MM titles in our repository – 15MM downloads since inception – Over 500,000 users spread across all continents

Page 7 A few minutes on the GCA program ● World’s first international 3rd party program ● Created to help publishers move forward ● Certifies output from publisher workflow – Not every title – 3 levels – Simple, Moderate, Complex – 2 Scores – WCAG AA & Born Accessible ● These are not separate files – Same ISBNs and prices – Just better ePubs ● A dozen partners already certified ● Hundreds of titles already available for sale

Page 8 A bit about formats ● Regardless of what format(s) you work in, some form of accessibility is possible ● We all thank you for whatever work you are doing about accessibility ● Fully accessible EPUB should be your end goal – If you aren’t there yet, that is OK – Each step in the journey is important ● Please reach out to Benetech or S4Carlisle for guidance on your path

Page 9 The ecosystem -- Many parts to make up the whole ● Author submits manuscript – edits, proofreading, copyedits, etc ● The book cycle – design, layout, pagination, cover, title, etc ● The conversion cycle – print book path, eBook path, audiobook path ● Warehousing/Wholesale/Retail – internal, CoreSource, Amazon, others ● Purchasing – Individual – From a bookstore, from Amazon, VitalSource, Redshelf,B&N – Instituion – Library, Department heads, Professors/Students ● Usage – Individual – I bought it, rented it, borrowed it – Institution – Library, Archival, Research
