ANSWER 15,000 ANSWER 320

    You need a calculator today!
TODAY’S OBJECTIVE

The students will learn to investigate
 multiplying and dividing numbers in
 scientific notation, trying to determine
the correct rules for the powers of 10.
CALCULATORS AND SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

To go from scientific notation to standard
 notation
  Example: 3.14 x 10 3
   3.14 EE 3 = 3140
To go from standard notation to scientific
 notation
  Example 25,600,000
  25,600,000 2 nd Sci (5) = 2.56 x 107
CALCULATORS AND SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

How do I enter a negative
 Example: 3.14 x 10 -3
   3.14 EE -3 = 0.00314
MULTIPLYING DECIMALS

How do we multiply 1.2 x 3.1?
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION: MULTIPLICATION AND
             DIVISION RULES
            WORKSHEET 101
 Work out problems 1, 4, 6, 10.
 Do them on your calculator and record the answers.
 Write a rule for multiplying numbers in scientific
          notation.
 Work out problems 16, 19, 20, 25, 27.
 Do them on your calculator and record the answers.
 Write a rule for dividing numbers in scientific
          notation.
 Work on side 100 doing the problem numbers that
are multiples of 5 while you wait for others to
        finish.
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION: MULTIPLICATION AND
             DIVISION RULES
            WORKSHEET 101
  1. 3.5 x 107
  4. 1.19 x 10 5
  6. 3.45 x 10 -5
  10. 1.2 x 10 8
  16. 2 x 10 2
  19. 1.06 x 107
  20. 5 x 101
  25. 2 x 101
  27. 6 x 10 -1
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION: MULTIPLICATION AND
                     DIVISION RULES

 Rules for multiplication:
 Multiply the decimals then add the exponents.
 Make sure your answer is in scientific notation.

 Rules for division:
 Divide the numbers then subtract the exponents.
 Make sure your answer is in scientific notation.
 WATCH YOUR SIGNS!! (subtracting is the same as
          adding the opposite)
GUIDED PRACTICE for Example 4

Write the product in scientific notation

 17. (1.25 x 106) x (7.6 x 1012).

         = 9.5 x 1018
GUIDED PRACTICE for Example 4

Write the product in scientific notation

 18. (8 x 106) x (5.65 x 104).

 = 45.20 x 1010 Write 45.2 in scientific notation.

 = 4.52 x 1011
GUIDED PRACTICE for Example 4

Write the product in scientific notation

   4.08 x 106
                            = 1.2 x 104
   3.4 x 102
GUIDED PRACTICE for Example 4

Write the product in scientific notation

   2.765 x 1021
                            = 3.5 x 1011
   7.9 x 109
