Scientific Notation Re-teaching to Perfection
POSITIVE EXPONENTS Mean you need to move the decimal to the right the number of spaces of the exponent Mean you are multiplying by 10 “that many times” Mean you are dealing with a large number
Writing into Standard 7.35 x 10 5 There are 2 numbers AFTER the decimal How many zeroes (if any) will you need to add? Write the number in standard notation on your scratch paper, then go to the next slide.
CHECK: 735,000 If you don’t understand at this point, stop and raise your hand. You need to ask your teacher and get some help. Don’t delay! It’s almost test day!! 7.35 x 10 5
Writing into scientific 92,000,000,000 You need a decimal x a power of 10 Count the digits (numbers) after the first number. This is your exponent! Write your number on scratch paper, then go to the next slide.
check it: 92,000,000,000 9.2 x 10 10 Please raise your hand and ask the teacher if you aren’t sure of how to get this answer. I WANT to help you! You just need to ask :)
NEGATIVE EXPONENTS Mean you need to move the decimal LEFT Mean you are really dividing by 10 the number of times as the exponent Mean you are dealing with a small number, NOT a negative number (no negative distances/measures)
into standard 2.73 x 10 -7 Remember you will move left 7 spaces. There is already ALWAYS one number to the left of the decimal, so you will add ONE LESS zero than the exponent! Write it on your paper and check it on the next slide.
CHECK your answer: 2.73 x 10 -7 0.000000273
into scientific 0.0095 Remember, you need a decimal x a power of 10 ( with a negative exponent ) and ONLY one number in front of the decimal It may be easiest to write the original number on your paper, put the decimal where you think it should be... and then count the numbers between your two decimals. Write it on your paper and move on when ready
check it 0.0095 9.5 x 10 -3 remember to ask for help if you need it!! These negative integers can be a little tricky!
great job!!! Please pick up a scientific notation practice page from the folder on the black bulletin board! Do your best, but ask for help when you need it!
