Use keywords relevant to the topic you are
researching
• Try to be obvious on topic first
• Use words likely to appear on a site with the information
• Make keywords as specific to you topic as possible
• Generally, capitalization and punctuation are not needed
• Search engines usually disregard minor words such as “the, and, to,
etc.”

Review several pages of search results for
valid information
• Look beyond the first page of search results to find information for
yours research.

Determine if the website is a credible and
reliable source
• Read the “About Us” section of a website to learn more about the
author or organization publishing the information
• Review the extension of the website in the address bar to determine
the source. If the website end in “.edu”,”.gov”,or “org”
• Exercise: search the meaning of website extension

Evaluation the accuracy of information(out of
date..)
• Some information is time-sensitive, and the source you may find and
use may be outdated or inaccurate.
• Example: If you are searching computer software you must use
information from an article published within the last few weeks or
months, instead of an article published from several years ago.

Skimming
• Skimming refers to the process of reading only main ideas within a
passage to get an overall impression of the content of a reading
selection.
Skimming Strategies
• Read the title it is the shortest possible summary of content
• Read the introduction or read the first paragraph completely
• Skimming usually achieves 1000 per minute.
Scanning
• Scanning is reading a text quickly in order to find specific information,
e.g. figures or named.
Scanning Strategies
• Keep in mind all the time what it is you are searching for.
• Analyse the organization of the content before starting to scan.
• Let your eyes move quickly overall several lines.
• When you find the sentence that has information you seek, read the
whole sentences.
