1.2 Linear Measure and Precision
Objective Measure segments and determine accuracy of measurement. Compute with measures.
Measure line segments Unlike a line, a line segment , or segment, can be measured because it has two endpoints. A segments with endpoints A and B can be named as or .
Read get ready for the lesson and then answer the following. What is another part of the body that is used as a unit of measure? Is a foot a customary unit or metric unit? Which system of measure uses fractions and whole numbers? Which system of measure uses decimals?
Examples Use a metric rule to draw each segment. , 42 millimeters long , 5 centimeters long
Examples Use a customary ruler to draw each segment. , 3 inches long , inches long
Precision The precision of any measurement depends on the smallest unit available on the measuring tool. The measurement should be precise to within 0.5 units of measure.
Example Find the precision for each measurement. Explain its meaning. 32 inches 15 millimeters
Calculate Measures When segments have the same measure they are said to be congruent.
Constructions Constructions are methods of creating geometric figures without the benefits of measure tools. Generally, only a pencil, straightedge, and compass are used. You can construct a segment that is congruent to a given segment. See example on page 16.
