The ERA Recording Form ‘ A work in progress’ Updated based on feedback but not tested We can’t change the content, but we could adjust the format if it would help recording Guidelines can be clarified/expanded if issues arise Trial Phase will be used to iron out any problems and ensure everyone in agreement – consistency is important Need your feedback!
Recording Form Section A Basic Information
Pre-visit research Most of Section A can be completed before you go onto the moor Important to be familiar with all the relevant information Read existing IAG records and look at drawings and photographs Check the rough location on a map (OS or Google Earth) and put the grid reference into your GPS Do checks of other data sources – HER, SAM, NMR Check Access/get permissions
Admin Complete as appropriate Number generated when database record created Add the team + names of the recorders who contributed
A1 Identifiers Available from the Master List: Other Names, e.g. Idol Stone Panel Name and Number Existing identifiers/references (need to check these)
A2 Location (original find site) Finding the panel grid reference (not always 6 fig) description from IAG records sketch of panel from IAG records OS map handheld GPS Rombalds Moor: Backstone Beck(E), Ilkley Moor, E of beck, within ancient enclosure. Small, low, flat rock. Nineteen cups and four almost straight grooves.
Can’t find it? Panels may be: relocated destroyed covered by vegetation taken! ???? If you cannot locate the panel complete Section A using existing information (Master List) & select ‘Not located in the Field’ in A4.
Uncovering the panel If you suspect that the panel is hidden by vegetation, please don’t excavate it! It is OK to remove loose or surrounding vegetation but not turf. Leave your trowel at home!
Location and Altitude Place the GPS device in middle of the panel and read off the grid reference Note: this may not be the same as the grid reference recorded by IAG as individual models may vary Read off the altitude (mOD)
Different grid reference? If different from IAG location by more than 20m : Enter your reference Add note in ‘Location Notes’ (Section B)
A3 Panel Type - Original context What was the panel’s original (prehistoric) context? OR OR
Art in the landscape (not portable) Select this if the panel is a free-standing boulder , is on bedrock , or is a cliff wall or a rock shelter and has no clear relationship with any other structure.

Art in a [prehistoric] structure (not portable) Select this if the panel is a fixed part of a burial cairn (e.g. kerbstone, cist slab), part of standing stone monument (e.g. a stone circle, standing stone, stone row), or other structure (e.g. a field wall). Please describe any other structures.

Art on a portable stone Select this if you think the panel could be carried by one or two people and is part of burial cairn material (e.g. a ‘cobble’), is a surface find without archaeological context, is from some other context (e.g. clearance cairn, field boundary), or the original context is unknown . No documented location – select this if previous records of the panel do not include an exact location, i.e. a grid reference. Not located in the field – select this if you have looked extensively but cannot find the panel using location information from previous records. 

Editor's Notes

  • #10: I've tried finding about 400 of the 650 in PRAoWR and I'd guess I've got within 5m of the intended panel 90% of the time (there's the other 10%). Technology has improved with regards to tools within modern nav grade GPS's but the actual accuracy will hardly have shifted. Accuracy tends to come down to the individual model. For instance, my Memory Map 2800 which came out in 2009 seems to be 10-15m less accurate than my 9 year old Garmin.
