This document discusses selective media used for bacterial growth. Selective media enhance the growth of particular bacteria while inhibiting other organisms. Some examples of selective media include Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar, which selects for Gram-negative bacteria; MacConkey agar, which selects for lactose-fermenting bacteria; Mannitol salt agar, which selects for staphylococci; and Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol (PEA) agar, which inhibits most Gram-negative bacteria. Each type of selective media exploits the nutritional requirements or sensitivities of different classes of bacteria.
