What Is E-learning?
A learning system based on formalized teaching but with the
help of electronic resources is known as E-learning
Economic Times
Design Principles For E Learning
 Selecting a realistic or authentic problem/scenario for the class or lesson
 Use as many physical senses as possible
 Provide the simplest possible initial instructions to give learners basic skills
to solve the problem
 Encourage the learners to accomplish a simple yet complete task in the
shortest possible period
 When designing scenario the printed or “flat’ instructions (e.g.. Webpage) if
students have difficulty finding where they are from a verbal description
alone, add related graphical icons and appropriate screen captures
 Identify where in the lesson students are having most problems and then
design and position anticipatory feedback near the spots where these
problems tend to occur
 For learners who like explanatory learning ,lessons should be flexible on
the other hand for more guided learning structured lessons should be
provided.

Computer Based
Training (CBT)
 It is a method by which the
computer program is used as a
teacher or an instructor
CBT can teach any conceivable
subject but it is normally used for
computer related studies
The CBT can either be
conducted in a classroom or an
individual, self paced format.
Before the 1980’s most self
paced training was paper based.
E.g. Fred Fielder and colleagues
developed culture assimilator
training for Americans travelling
to particular countries. Trainees
read various vignettes of the other
culture , and then made choices as
to why they thought a particular
action had been taken .each
response directed the trainee to a
particular page on the workbook.

Self Paced Computer Based Training Media and Methods
Advantages Of CBT
 Flexibility: gives the trainees oppertunities to learn what
they want to and where and when they want to
 Controlled: as the computer delivery is programmed only
with the course material, it will deliver only that matter in
an efficient way. Hence there is low chance of error
 Reduces training costs: the greatest advantage of CBT is
that it reduces cost of travel, training facilities, hotel rooms,
meals, trainers and employers time
 Just in time: workers can quickly apply the skill and
knowledge acquired from CBT on their job
 Self pace: each learner can progress at his or her pace
Disadvantages Of CBT
 Availability: if computers are not available training cannot
be given
 Technical Support Is Necessary: multimedia always requires
hardware and software electric supply and surge protectors
are key
 Poor Access: many learners do not have access to computer
networks
 Poor Knowledge: wide spread of computer literacy and fear
of computers still exists in many settings
o Computer Aided Instruction
Computer assisted/aided instruction is an interactive
instructional technique whereby a computer is used to
present the instructional material and monitor the learning
that takes place

Advantages Of CAI
 One to one interaction
 Freedom to experiment with learning options
 Immediate feedback
 Self-pacing
 Privacy for slow learners
 Learners have been found to learn more and at a rapid speed
 Multimedia provides a variety of formats to present difficult
material
 Self-directed learning allows learners to decide when ,
where and what to learn
Disadvantages OF CAI
 Learner may feel overwhelmed at the volume of material
produced
 Overuse of multimedia can distract from intended learning
objectives
 Inability to ask a person a question when material is not
understood
 Equipment can malfunction
 Lack of good CAI packages or lack of infrastructure to
deliver CAI
What Kind Of Learners Benefit ?
1) Independent
2) self-motivated
3) Enjoy receiving frequent feedback
How To Measure The Effectiveness Of CAI
1) Through changes in productivity and profits
2) Cost benefit analysis that compares CAI with other
techniques
EXAMPLES OF CAI PROGRAMMES
1) Manpower's SKILLWARE program
2) Reinhart’s report
3) The success story of Anderson consulting
Failure Of CAI Methods
 The CAI method may fail in cases that require;
1) Interpersonal skill building
2) Also while dealing with unmotivated learners more
traditional training methods may be required

oInternet And Intranet Based Training
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INTERNET AND INTRANET
SR NO BASIS FOR
COMPARISON
INTERNET INTRANET
1 MEANING CONNECTS
DIFFERENT NETWORK
OF COMPUTERS
TOGETHER
IT IS A PART OF
INTERNET WHICH IS
PRIVATELY OWNED
BY A PARTICULAR
FIRM
2 ACCESSIBILITY ANYONE CAN ACCESS
THE INTERNET
ACCESSIBLE ONLY BY
THE ORGANIZATION
MEMBERS, HAVING
LOGIN DETAILS.
3 SAFETY IS NOT AS SAFE AS
COMPARED TO
INTRANET
SAFE
4 NO OF USERS UNLIMITED LIMITED
5 VISITORS TRAFFIC MORE LESS
6 NETWORK TYPE PUBLIC PRIVATE
7 INFORMATION
PROVIDED
UNLIMITED, AND CAN
BE VIEWED BY
EVERYONE
LIMITED, AND
CIRCULATES AMONG
THE MEMBERS OF AN
ORGANIZATION
Intranet
 Intranets are computer networks that use internet and world
wide web technology, software ,tools and protocols for
finding ,managing, creating and distributing information
within one organization
 In 2003 state of industry report published by ATSD, only
15% of training is being delivered using current
technologies.
 As intranets use the internet as a medium of information a
lot of safeguards are created to protect information like
firewalls, encryption and passwords
Self Paced Computer Based Training Media and Methods
Intranet Based Training
 uses internal computer networks for training purposes
 Through their organizations intranet ,HRD professionals can
communicate with learners, conduct needs assessment and other
administrative tasks, transmit course materials, training
documents, multimedia programs and administer tests at any time
and throughout the organization, whether the employee is in the
U.S or overseas
 IBT is a powerful organizations spread across the globe
 IBT has most of the features of multimedia CD-ROM program,
plus the capability for users to communicate quickly
 IBT is now fully interactive with sound, video and 3-D imaging
and will now compete with disk based media like CD-ROMs as a
primary means of providing training via technology
Advantages Of IBT
 Intranets offer workforce productivity which can help user to find
and observe information very fast
 Intranet permits business companies to share out information to
employees according to their need or requirements
 The best advantage offered by intranet is communications within
an organization or business company, landscape or portrait
 The most significant advantage of Intranet is Web publishing
which permits burdensome corporate knowledge to be continued
and effortlessly access all through the company using Web
technologies and hypermedia
 Another advantage of Intranet is time saving because there is no
need to maintain physical documents such as procedure manual,
requisition forms, and internet phone list
Cont…
 Intranet saves the money of any organization on printing,
publishing and overall maintenance.
 Through Intranet common corporate culture every user
can view the similar information.
Disadvantages Of IBT
 intranet has great features for interconnected manners but
has some disadvantages too
 Management does need to stop control of specific
information, this problem can be minimized but with
appropriate prudence
 The other disadvantage of Intranet is security issue
 Intranet gatheres everything in one location which is
really good but if it is not prearranged then it spoils
everything
 The cost of intranet is very high but has lots of
advantages after implementing
Self Paced Computer Based Training Media and Methods
oIntelligent Computer Assisted Instruction
 ICAI goes beyond CAI in terms of flexibility and ability to
quantitatively evaluate learners performance
 While a typical CAI program will allow learners to select from
among several levels of presentation and ICAI program is able to
discern the learners capabilities from the learners response
patterns by analyzing the learners errors
 The goal of ICAI systems is to provide learners with an
electronic teachers assistant that can patiently offer advice to
individual learners, encourage learner practice and simulate
learners curiosity through experimentation
 This would make the teacher more available for more creative
endeavors or for helping learners to overcome subtle or difficult
problems beyond the capability of ICAI
 Examples of ICAI programs are DIAGNOSER, Lisp
computer language tutor from Carnegie-Mellon
university, us navy steamer program, Aldo etc
 ICAI programs are based on artificial intelligence, which
involves engineering some aspects of human process into
a computer
 Artificial intelligence is uncovering ways to improve
ICAI programs capability to use natural language to
interact with the learner and to understand the learner
Conclusion
1. CBT has been a breakthrough in the field of HRD, not
only has it lead to reduction in costs of companies but it
has also increased their profits as well as the productivity
of employees
2. Even though CBT is catching up in most areas of the
world still today only 15% of the population has access to
it
3. Hence it is necessary that more development be done in
the area of E learning
THANK YOU
