Planning
Project Management
Basics
Before developing a project, consider:
• What is the purpose,objective?
• Who is the audience?
• What are the desired outcomes?
• What are the key elements of the project?
• What is the timeframe?
• Is there a budget?
• Who is the sponsor?
Group Discussion
Step 1
List your project objectives.
ᅳWhat defines a successful project?
ᅳMeasures (How will you know you achieved
success?)
Describe your project & its scope
 Why are we doing this project, benefits, etc
Project
Management
Project Planning
Step 2
Executive summary
• description of the project
• explains why the project is needed
• what you plan to accomplish
• how long you expect the project to take
• what the project deliverables are
• how many members will work on it
• how much costing will be devoted
Project Planning

Project
Scheduling
Why are schedules important to
projects? What value do they add?
Project
Scheduling
Purposes:
• Provides a commitment about when things will be done
• Encourage everyone on the project to see their efforts
as part of a whole
• Provides a tool for breaking work into manageable
chunks
• Provides a tool for measuring progress
Project
Scheduling
The Schedule is a living document that constantly changes
and manages the work effort of everyone on the team.
 File Type - Use a spreadsheet or project management
software (MS Excel & MS Project are common &
effective)
 Task list and timeline
ᅳBreakdown of Work (Phases, activities, tasks)
ᅳResources assigned to tasks
ᅳStart and end dates for tasks (time to complete
each task)
