SEMIOTIC PLANE
Is the study of signs and symbol and their use or
interpretation.
Derive from the Greek word “semiotikus”
meaning interpreter of sign.
Based on semiosis it is the relationship between
sign, object and a meaning.
is the study of "signs A sign consists of a
"signifier" or its material/physical aspect
and its "signified" or non-material aspect
as concept and value.
Related to these is the "referent" or object
as it exists in the real world.
Semiotics is the science of signs. It is known as
an approach to expose the fundamental
structural elements of the meaning of an object
or a term.
Branches of Semiotics
Semantics- this is relation between signs
and what they refer to and what they
mean.
 It focuses on the relationship between the sign and the
referent.
 It seeks to find out what the sign represents and
recognizes that the meaning of the sign depends on the
person and the situation in which the sign is used.
Branches of Semiotics
Syntactic- relationship with sign and
formal structure.
House and
lot for Sale
`
 This is the study of the relationship among signs and how
people combine signs into complex systems of
meaning.
 Think of how “emoticons” stringed to together can
create a sentence of meaning.
Branches of Semiotics
Pragmatics- relationship with sign and their
effect.
 This branch is concerned with how the practical use
of signs relates to everyday life.
 This branch is very important to the field of
communication because many communication theorists
are interested in how people use signs to and sign
systems to accomplish things in the world.
Ferdinand de Saussure
A Swiss linguistics who created the term
semiotics.
Born : 26 November 1857 Geneva, Switzerland
His ideas laid a foundation for many significant
developments in both linguistics and semiology
in the 20th century.
According to Ferdinand de Saussure, meaning is
produced from the interplay of the signifiers of
the work.
SEMIOTIC-PLANE and the universe are in a good place
Signifier and Signified
Signifier- the physical element, the actual spoke
nor written word.
Signifier and Signified
Signified- the mental concept the idea of the
sign.

Signs and Symbols
Signs- is a symbol which is understood to refer
something other that itself.
Signs and Symbols
Symbols- is an object that represents, stands for
or suggest an idea or visual image.
Three Categories of Signs
Symbol
signifier does not resemble the signified.
Indicate without implied meaning, of has a
casual relationship with the message.
Three Categories of Signs
 Icon
 Signifier is perceived as resembling or imitating the
signified.
 An object mark or sound whose relevance is defined by
convention.

Index
Signifier is directly connected in some way to
the signified.
Communicate through analogy or resemblance
to that which they signify.
The basic semiotic plane covers the
elements and the general technical and
physical aspects of the work with their
semantic (meaning-conveying potential).
It includes:
The visual elements and how they are used.
The choice of medium and technique.
The format of the work.
Other physical properties and marks of the work.
The elements of the visual arts derive their
semantic or meaning-conveying potential from
two large sources:
human psychophysical experiences
(psychological and physical/sensory) which are
commonly shared;
the socio-cultural conventions of a
particular society and period
