Service Learning & Portfolio We understand that to develop the workers of tomorrow we as educators must be on the cutting edge of learning -individually and as an organization. We use and understand the concept of servant leadership and service to our communities. We use portfolio as a graduation requirement for our students so that they are able to articulate what they have learned and why that learning is relevant to employers. We create learner pathways that support multiple ways in which learning can happen.
NSCC’s Commitment to Community “ A community college should be a center of community life, focus on the needs of all age groups, provide education leadership and college capability to local business, industry and community… “ Kevin Quinlan July 2003 CCEDP
Dimensions of Community Economic Social Political Cultural Environmental Spiritual Health
If community service is integral to the mandate of NSCC as a contemporary community college … . where do we begin? … .what skills do we have? … .what skills do we need? So…
What is Service Learning? Service learning combines academic studies with community volunteer service, enhancing student learning through a hands-on portfolio learning experience that meets a community need.
Benefits to Learners Obtain a “real world” learning experience Learn new skills Meet people in the community from different backgrounds Explore career options Make a difference in the community by sharing their skills and talents Connect with the community Helps student to achieve portfolio learning
Benefits to Learners Develops critical thinking tools Requires intentional reflection components. SL programs and courses assist students to make meaning from their community experiences connect real-life experience to more theoretical classroom study to develop as individuals, in relation to their values, their sense of social responsibility and their leadership skills.
Models of Best Practice – STFX University Service learning community support committee In service learning, co-ordination is essential Close to 20% of STFX students participate in a service learning activity This year 64 community organizations, 988 students, averaging 20 hours of service each …… .. STFX Service Learning Newsletter 2006
Best Practices in Service Learning Evaluation model has been developed with input from local organizations, students and faculty Faculty support and development fund Partnerships that need “truthful, two-way communication, respect and joint involvement from the beginning” Strait Campus – we had 23 projects this year in Human Services programs
What do Faculty need to develop a service learning project? Faculty design the course or project from curriculum document Establishing learning goals Plan for evaluation of learning (Rubric handout) Implementing reflection techniques that draw meaning from the experience for the StudentsBlogs, sweat and volunteers (University of Manitoba) http://myuminfo.umanitoba.ca/index.asp?sec=2&too=100&eve=8&dat=5/15/2007&npa=12846
Faculty role cont’d… Link experiential learning to other more formal academic learning sources in the curriculum Guides students through the experiential component (problem based learning, debriefing sessions) Foster a strong relationship with the community organization Explores possibilities to involve staff from community organizations as co-educators.
Toolkit for Faculty Introduction to Service-Learning Toolkit: Readings and Resources for Faculty (Second Edition) http://www.communityservicelearning.ca/en/index.cfm
Characteristics of Successful Partnerships Communication and feedback Trust and openness Risk and benefit sharing Problem solving Planning and decision making Tracking and evaluation
Partnership Development Basics Conflict and differences will exist in the development process. Conflicts can arise for various reasons including: Values Goals Processes and policies
Finding the balance Effective community service-learning programs are based on partnerships that have reciprocal benefits for the community organizations and the students. There should be a balance between the service being provided and the learning that is occurring. Clear roles and specific responsibilities are one of the hallmarks of a successful SL experience for the partners involved.
NSCC is positioned to deal with “the messy dirty, problems of the day…by delivering high quality programs, by meeting the needs of our society. “ Fine words butter no parsnips” Ray Ivany, CCEDP 2003
