Introduction




We use inductive and deductive reasoning everyday. Only
when it is applied to mathematics, do many people become
glassy-eyed and foggy-brained. Reasoning is fun and the
more often these concepts are presented to you, the better
your grasp of logic will become. Have fun and learn for
application !
Task
DC Comics is planning a new Sherlock Holmes comic series. To spark
the interest of the readers, you—the author of the comics—will have to
utilize both inductive and deductive reasoning to solve a seemingly
impossible case. Sherlock Holmes is a detective and is not bound by the
same laws as a police officer, so feel free to be creative.

2.Learn about inductive and deductive reasoning through visiting the four sites
listed below. The two sites will provide a definition of deductive reasoning, the
second will define inductive reasoning, and the third will compare the two

the third site list which argument in the movie is inductive and which is

Standards
Preparing students for the proof-related concepts
in the Geometry Common Core Standards, such as
•G-GPE.5. Prove the slope criteria for parallel and perpendicular lines
and use them to solve geometric problems (e.g., find the equation of a
line parallel or perpendicular to a given line that passes through a given
point).
•G-C.1. Prove that all circles are similar.
•G-SRT.4. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: a line
parallel to one side of a triangle divides the other two proportionally, and
conversely; the Pythagorean Theorem proved using triangle similarity.
Teacher Notes
This assignment will take about three days to complete. It is created to be
presented before the students become too involved in the details of the course.
 Since Geometry courses often include numerous mathematical proofs, it is
important to show students this line of reasoning early on.




There is a large amount of creative writing required for this assignment, so it is
not recommended that this lesson be attempted unless students have been
trained in creative writing.
