Lifestyle Review - Only you know when you can work at your optimal level. Be honest with yourself and possibly make some lifestyle changes for the duration of the exams. Ask yourself Do I prefer to study early in the morning, during the day or late at night? During which part of the day have I produced my best work? How can I motivate myself to work at this time of the day? Take breaks – The ideal length of each study period is around 40 minutes. At the end of each period take a break of around 10 mins to let your mind recompose itself. This helps you to absorb the information.
Use a topic tracker for each subject. Break this subject into topics Estimate how much you know of each topic – give yourself a %
Aromatherapy Smell is one of the most powerful triggers of memory. Use a different essential oil for each subject you are revising. In the exam aid recall with the smell of the oil on a tissue.
Be active – Simply reading and rereading your notes is a passive approach. You will retain more information if you revision is active and enjoyable.
Mind mapping – also known as spider grams. Write a subject heading in the middle of a page and add branches to structure the details. Using pictures, colours and sounds all help the revision process. http://inspiration.com/quicktours/index.cfm?fuseaction=Insp_Quicktour_QT
Eat More Chocolate Chocolate has a high sugar content and is a good way to boost your energy levels when your enthusiasm for revision is waning.
Groups – group revision is a good opportunity to discuss a subject and clear up any doubt you may have about certain topics. You can all help each other. Make up games to test each other or teach a topic the others are not sure of. Use PowerPoint or Formulator Tarsia
Play Music As long as it doesn’t disrupt your concentration, it is OK to listen to music when you revise. Some music can actually help you to retain information. Try not to sing along as this can be a distraction.
Draw – produce pictures, diagrams and posters of your information. They will be easier to remember than pages of notes.
Use Flash Cards to help you revise. Choose a colour for each different subject you are studying. Write down key words or phrases or important equations or formulae on one side of the card. Write a brief explanation or definition on the other. Hole punch each card in the top left hand corner and use a treasury tag to keep them together. Go through your ‘pack of cards’ at the start and end of each of your study sessions. Maths
Rewards – Give yourself a reward when you finish a successful revision session.
