CLOUD?

Case Study Question
Question 1
 What Business Benefits do cloud computing services
provide? What problems do they solve?
 During the last few years, cloud computing has become a buzzword on the
internet. According to analysts, this market segment has a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of around 10%, and is expected to reach USD 205.48 billion by
2018.
Cloud computing means that instead of all the computer hardware and software
you're using sitting on your desktop it provides for you as a service by another
company and accessed over the Internet, usually in a completely seamless way.
 For example of cloud computing.
Simply log on to a web-based service such as Google Documents and you can create a
document, spreadsheet, presentation, or whatever you like using Web-based software.
What makes cloud computing different?
 The service you use is provided by someone else and managed on your behalf.
 Nor do you have to worry about viruses that might affect your computer or about
backing up the files you create.
 One basic principle of cloud computing is that you no longer need to worry how
the service you're buying is provided
 Cloud services are available on-demand and often bought on a "pay-as-you go" or
subscription basis. Just like electricity, you can buy as much or as little of a cloud
computing service as you need from one day to the next.
 Tt means you don't have to buy your own gigantic computer system and risk have
it sitting there doing nothing.
 The world's biggest online retailer, Amazon, became the world's largest provider
of public cloud computing in early 2006. When it found it was using only a
fraction of its huge, global, computing power, it started renting out its spare
capacity over the Net through a new entity called Amazon Web Services(AWS).
 Some of the problems solved by the cloud computing are:-
 Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) means you're buying access to raw computing
hardware over the Net, such as servers or storage.
 Software as a Service (SaaS) means you use a complete application running on
someone else's system.
 Platform as a Service (PaaS) means you develop applications using Web-based
tools so they run on systems software and hardware provided by another
company
 Anytime, Anywhere, Access.
 Managed cloud services reduces your operational cost.
Cont.…
 You always have professionals for your help.
 Save Your Time.
 Standardization efforts
 Public investment
 Pay-as-you-go
 Risk of missing out
 Reduced Data Disaster Perils
 Zero Maintenance Headaches
 Global Access: On-demand Provisioning
Question 2
 What are the disadvantages of cloud computing?
 In spite of its many benefits, as mentioned above, Cloud computing also
has its disadvantages.
 Businesses, especially smaller ones, need to be aware of these aspects
before going in for this technology. The main risks involved in Cloud
Computing are:
 Technical Issues:-Businesses should be aware of the fact that this
technology is always prone to outages and other technical issues.
 Security in the Cloud:-Beneficiaries should know that they will be
surrendering all their company’s sensitive information to a third-party
cloud service provider. This could potentially impose a great risk to the
company.
 Prone to attack:- Storing information in the cloud could make the
companies vulnerable to external hack attacks and threats, therefore
there is always the lurking possibility of stealth of sensitive data.
 Possible downtime:-Cloud computing makes the small business
dependent on the reliability of their Internet connection.
Cont.…
 Cost:-At first glance, a cloud computing application may appear to be a lot
cheaper than a particular software solution installed and run in-house. Still, the
companies need to ensure that the cloud applications have all the features that the
software does and if not, to identify which are the missing features important to
them. A total cost comparison is also required.
 Inflexibility:- Choosing a Cloud computing vendor often means locking the
business into using their proprietary applications or formats. For instance, it is not
possible to insert a document created in another application into a Google Docs
spreadsheet.
 Lack of support:-Anita Campbell(OPEN Forum) writes, "Customer service for
Web apps leaves a lot to be desired - all too many cloud-based applications make
it difficult to get customer service promptly – or at all. Sending an email and
hoping for a response within 48 hours is not an acceptable way for most of us to
run a business".
Question 3
 How do the concept of capacity planning , scalability and TCO
apply to this case? Apply these concepts both to Amazon and
to the subscribers of its service?
 Capacity planning is the process of predicting when a computer
hardware system becomes saturated to ensure that adequate
computing resources are available for work of different priorities
and that the firm has enough computing power for its current and
future needs.
 Scalability is a ability of a system, network or process to handle a
growing amount of work in capable manner or its ability to be
enlarged to accommodate that growth.
 Total Cost Ownership (TCO) is a financial estimate intended to
help buyer and owners determine the direct and indirect cost of a
product or system.
Cont.…
Amazon must plan its future needs to be capable of providing sufficient computing
power for both AWS and Amazon retail services, a lack of which will result in the a fore
mentioned rejection by subscribers.
Scalability relates to both Amazon and AWS subscribers. Amazon must be able to
provide its customers with services that are scalable, as it claims to do on its website.
If they overestimate their needs they risk financial losses , and if they underestimate
they run the risk of creating shortages for their own business needs as well as
subscribers. As subscribers ,if they run into non-availabilitiy too often they will lose
faith in the ability of Amazon to manager their services and seek out other vendors –
again causing potential to them as a company.
Cont..
 Amazon must give equipment scope organization and adaptability. With the
advancement of data innovation, Amazon will have an ever increasing number of
clients. Not simply Amazon, but rather Amazon's client requires a huge database to
store an assortment of information and data.
 This will enable the organization to develop. Amazon must bear the aggregate TCO
of its administrations, while Amazon is additionally expected to keep up the benefit
of the organization.
 Nonetheless, the administrations' endorsers advantage from not worrying about
these issues.
Question 4
 What kind of businesses are most likely to be benefited from
using cloud computing? Why?
 There are business ideas that are potentially much more profitable than
they seem to be.
 Accounting, Tax Preparation, Bookkeeping and Payroll Services
 Management, Scientific and Technical Consulting Services
 Automotive Equipment Rental and Leasing
 Children’s App Designing
 Software Training
 Food Trucks
 Freelancing
 Translator
 Livestock feed supply
 App Testing Business
THANK YOU….!!!
