Ines Cilmi School: Lalor East P.S. Language: Italian Year Level Grade 5/6
Context The aim of  my investigation was to demonstrate to students that learning a second language and in particular Italian can enhance and support English literacy. I also wanted to highlight the fact  that this year is the  International Year of Languages.
What did you do? To highlight the International Year of languages I made a display which consisted of different language alphabets. I researched foreign words that are commonly used in English. Before beginning formal lessons students were taken to see the display. This gave the students the opportunity to observe, discuss and make comment.
 
 
Classroom Practice. Session.1. In pairs or groups of 3 students looked at supermarket catalogues and searched for words that they thought came from other languages  Students reported their findings to the class, These were listed, discussed and classified.
Session.2/3. Students compared two different supermarket catalogues and recorded their findings on a teacher prepared worksheet. Students made statements on their findings. Session.4. Students were given a choice of tasks to record their findings.
 
 
 
 
 
 
What did you learn? I found that students were engaged and a great deal of talk and discussion took place. Students were keen to share their knowledge of their own mother tongue. Students were proud to share their knowledge and  I sensed  a great deal of satisfaction and self worth in that they felt that their culture and knowledge actually had relevance to the English language. I realized that students did not have a good understanding of how the English language works and the influence of other languages. I believe that students who have another language coped with the activity a lot easier. We need to focus some of our language activities to show relevance to our day to day life, make activities relevant to real situations.
