Our Methodology “Build Specific Insulations Solutions” • Communication is fundamental to the success of any project • The “Health” of the occupants and the “Safety” of the building fabric • In many cases the value of the upgrade measure is a small fraction of the job cost or eventual monetary or perceived value • Risk Assessments form part of our daily lives so why exclude it from our retrofits • Our solutions are fit for purpose, optimize Gross Internal Area and sustain breathability where appropriate

IWI Simple Questions to start… • Do the project stakeholders • understand the impact of the proposed upgrades? • Do they want to know! • Is the proposed upgrade solution fit for purpose? • Is it achievable with the conditions on site? • Does it address the risk of damage to (a) the building and (b) health of human users? • Will a simulation / analysis help to reveal problems? • If so then how reliable is the other material information? ~10 nm Can we meet U Value Requirement? What do we know about the building? Is the result breathable or not? Vapour Barrier or variable diffusion membrane What lifespan do we expect? Who is setting the standards?

Risks with Internal approach to Solid Walls • Solid walls are often quite damp in Winter & Spring • Brick, mortar and some stone can wick water to the internal face through capillary transport • Pre retrofit heat loss will help to dry out the wall during the wet season (January to December in Ireland) • The application of IWI will interrupt the heat flow and associated drying, leaving the wall at risk of being very wet during freeze thaw events • The resultant damage can be serious • U Values should be carefully considered & thermal bridges must be treated

Risks with Internal approach to Solid Walls • Thermal bridges must be treated • Appropriate materials should be used to limit heat loss but save space where necessary • Does the project require a vapour barrier – usually on the warm side of the insulation • But in this case where does the vapour go during late spring to late autumn – reverse diffusion is prevented! • Any gaps in the insulation or vapour control layer may be detrimental to the project success – not today or tomorrow but eventually – consider a Park Lane or heritage project, is it worth the risk?

Vapour Open “Breathable” Solution? • For a material to be truly “Breathable” it must display all of the following characteristics. 1 Vapour Permeable – can transfer water as vapour 2 Hygroscopic – ability to absorb water as a liquid 3 Capillarity Active - ability to release water as a liquid through it’s pores • In short the materials can deal with the formation of water due to vapour condensing and direct it in the path of least resistance – either to the outside or inside face of the solid wall

Vapour Open – Wall Preparation • It is imperative that all materials in the existing wall to be insulated must be “Breathable” • Wall containing Non Breathable materials must be completely removed – eg gypsum, sand & cement, paint etc. • Once complete we recommend treating the external façade with one of out SIL – T products to aide the short and long term safety of the fabric • Internal walls need to be finished with a minimum 9mm Lime Parge coat to provide an airtight and hygroscopic layer • The system has to be finished with lime based plaster • The lime plaster has to be finished with a natural or mineral paint

Vapour Tight Solution – IWI Solid Walls • Vapour tight systems are the most common solution used on the market today, usually in the form of Thermal Laminates – Insulated Plaster Board • Considering a “Non Breathable” wall cannot cope naturally with the movement of water then these critical factors MUST all be present in an IWI system 1 Continuous Vapour Control Layer – Board Joints 2 Continuous Insulation Layer – No thermal breaks 3 Thermal Bridging due to multiply fixing 4 Thermal Looping due an unventilated cavity 5 Adequate treatment of thermal bridging – reveals, returns & floors

- 21. Why are existing thermal laminates Approved? 4. General 4.4 When insulating solid walls, particularly older exposed walls, designers should consider the extent to which the wall and components in the wall can tolerate the lower temperatures and prolonged drying time resulting from the application of the insulating drylining. Care should also be taken to assess the risks of interstitial condensation forming on thermal bridges that cannot be effectively insulated. 4.7 It is essential that proper care and attention is given to maintaining the integrity/continuity of vapour control layers (VCL). 4.10 The Installation of an insulating drylining system requires careful detailing around doors and windows to achieve a satisfactory surface for finishing. In addition, every attempt should be made to minimise the risk of thermal bridging at reveals and where heavy separating walls are attached to the external wall. Existing IWI Certificate “It is Critical that there IS a continuous vapour control layer” “Opt in or Out – how will BIM work with this type of inadequate information?” “All cold bridging CAN and Should be addressed – Opt In or Out” Certification must state - OPT IN- how products or systems deal with these critical areas - If they don’t then they must state this - OPT OUT

What is a cold (heat) bridge? • Heat loss through a localised area where the primary insulation layer is interrupted or significantly reduced • Difficult but not impossible to treat in solid wall insulation • Become more significant where the building fabric has been upgraded Effects of a cold bridge • Rise in heat energy demand • Indoor surfaces at lower winter temperatures • Increased risk of surface condensation • Risk of damages to building units, leading to vacancies & rehousing costs • Danger of mildew, causing serious health threats, potential litigation • Complaints, withheld payments, reputation damage

Why is this not more of an issue in SWI? • Lack of Knowledge & Training in cold bridging and ventilation impacts • Certification of systems and what details they cover? • Complexity in dealing with areas – Space • Lack of suitable cost effective solutions • BUT… • Enviroform Solutions are now in the unique position to provide unique products to tackle all these critical areas and therefore future proof the insulation upgrade and fabric of the building
- 29. What is Certified – Best or Standard Practice? 4. General 4.7 The Fixing of rainwater goods, satellite dishes, clothes lines, hanging baskets and similar items is outside the scope of this certificate. 6. Thermal Performance 6.3 The systems can contribute to maintaining continuity of thermal insulation at junctions between elements and openings. Details shown in Figure 2 will allow use of the default psi values for Accredited Construction details in Emission rate calculations to SAP 2009 or the simplified Building Energy Model (SBEM). Guidance on limiting heat loss at junctions can be found in. Northern Ireland – Accredited Construction Details (version 1.0) 11. Risk of Condensation 11.1 Designers must ensure that an appropriate condensation risk analysis has been carried out for all parts of a construction, including at junctions, openings and penetrations to minimise the risk of condensation. The recommendations of BS 5250:2011 should be followed.
