Social Deviation
Definition:
1. “Behavior or action that is
inconsistent or contrary to social
values and norms in society.”
2. “All human behavior, either
individually or in groups that are
inconsistent with the values and
norms developed within the group.”

Characteristics of Social
Deviation
According to Paul Horton, social
deviation is characterized by:
 society defines the action as deviant
 the deviant is either absolute and
relative
 the deviant is either acceptable or
rejected
 emerging deviations from the real and
ideal culture
 there are evasion and deviation norms
(DA #1: find the definition and one example from each term above)
Factors causing social
deviation
1. unhealthy mental influences
2. Imperfect socialization
3. Outlet disappointment
4. Economic limitations
5. The desire to be praised by others
6. Negative influence from the surrounding and
mass/social media
7. Differential association
8. Dissemination of subcultural socialization
9. Absorption of values and norms in the
socialization process is not optimal
10. Labeling

The Relationship between
Socialization and Social
Deviation
 The process of socialization can lead
to the emergence of deviant behavior.
 There are two process of socialization
which lead to deviant behavior:
1. deviant learning process
2. imperfect socialization process
1. Deviant learning process
 Definition:
“Individuals or groups do the process of
socialization in the form of learning to
do deviations. Individuals or groups
consciously want to commit deviant.”

2. Imperfect socialization
process
Definition:
“Agencies or socialization media that do
not carry out a proper socialization
process”

Classification of social
deviation
A. Based on the types
1. Primary deviation
2. Secondary deviation
B. Based on its nature:
1. Positive deviant
2. Negative deviant
C. based on the number of perpetrators
1. Individual
2. Collective

Social control on social
deviation
According to Bruce J. Cohen,
 control of social deviations are ways
or methods used to encourage a
person to behave in harmony with
the will of a particular group or
society.
 Communities can invite, educate,
and force citizens to comply with the
prevailing social values and norms in
society.
Function of social control
 reinforcing public confidence in social
norms
 rewarding citizens who obey the norm
 develop a sense of shame
 develop fear
 creating a legal system
Control process of deviant
behavior
Control process of deviant behavior is divided
into:
 The ways of social control
◦ Persuasive
◦ Coersive
 The nature of social control
◦ Preventive
◦ Represive
 Form of social control
◦ Formal
◦ Non-formal
