- 4. What is Software •A computer can perform different tasks, depending on the instructions it is given. •A list of instructions is called a program. Without a program to tell it what to do, a computer would just be a (useless) collection of hardware devices. •Software is the name given to programs that are stored as files on a storage device such as the hard disk, DVD or memory sticks. Software Types There are two main types of software: 1.System Software - programs designed to operate and control the computer hardware and help manage the day to day running of the computer such as Microsoft Windows. 2.Application Software - the everyday programs that you use such as Microsoft Office, graphics packages and web browsers. Firstly you will have to decide which software features you will need to use before deciding which piece of software will be the best. Software
