Software
Starter Activity: Programs, Programs, Everywhere
•Think about what apps, programs and
applications you have used today.
•Be ready to feedback your thoughts to the rest of
the class.
Software
In this lesson you will learn about the different
software types. You will identify what software
you use and decide what software will be the best
to complete a range of jobs.
Lesson
Objectives
 Be able to explain what software is
 Understand the different types and roles of software
 Be able to select the correct software for a job
 Be able to identify similarities in application software
Software
What is Software
•A computer can perform different tasks,
depending on the instructions it is given.
•A list of instructions is called a program. Without
a program to tell it what to do, a computer would
just be a (useless) collection of hardware devices.
•Software is the name given to programs that are
stored as files on a storage device such as the
hard disk, DVD or memory sticks.
Software
Task 15: Name the Software
Create a table 10 rows by 2 columns. Add 10
different tasks that you can do on a computer then
name the software program you would use to
complete the task.
Task Software Program
Browse the Internet Internet Explorer
Software
Software Types
There are two main types of software:
1.System Software - programs designed to
operate and control the computer hardware and
help manage the day to day running of the
computer such as Microsoft Windows.
2.Application Software - the everyday programs
that you use such as Microsoft Office, graphics
packages and web browsers.
Software
Task 16: Application or System
Create a table 9 rows by 2 columns. Decide
whether the task will be completed in either
application or system software.
Software
Task Software Type
Creation of a graph for a business
Sorting out where to store data on disks
Dealing with usernames and passwords
Writing a business letter
Creating a advert poster for a rock concert
Organising of files and folders
Managing the hardware printer, monitor
Task 17: Screen or Paper
Software is designed either to present information
to screen or present information on paper.
Software
Task 18: The Best Software for the Job
This is a multipart task. Your job is to decide what
software will be the most suitable for a range of
different jobs. Firstly you will have to decide which
software features you will need to use before
deciding which piece of software will be the best.
Software
The First Job is: The writing of a personalised letter
to all local businesses asking if they will donate a
prize for the school fair.
Move onto the next slide to make your choice. You
will be ask to explain your decision later.
Software
Software
• The Second Job is: The creation of a booklet
about software with a chapter for each type of
application and add an index to help the users.
Move onto the next slide to make your choice. You
will be ask to explain your decision later.
Software
Software
• The Third Job is: The design a poster to advertise
a Christmas play, using photos from rehearsals.
Move onto the next slide to make your choice. You
will be ask to explain your decision later.
Software
Software
• The Forth Job is: Production of some visual aids
containing multimedia for a talk you are giving
about animal experimentation. You will also
need to give hand outs.
Move onto the next slide to make your choice. You
will be ask to explain your decision later.
Software
Software
• The Fifth Job is: Design of a letterhead for Skater
World. Creation of a toolbar shortcut to enable
easy access to the document when writing a
letter.
Move onto the next slide to make your choice. You
will be ask to explain your decision later.
Software
Software
Task 19: What Software
Create a table 6 rows by 3 columns. Record what
software you decided would be the best for each
of the jobs and why you choose that software?
Software
Job Software Why this Software
1 Personalised Letter
2 Software Booklet
3 Christmas Play Poster
4 Multimedia based visual aids
5 Letterhead for Skater World
Submission of Work
This is the end of the unit. Your teacher will tell
you what files you need to submit for marking.
Software
Plenary: Question Overload
Write down three key questions which you think
people in the class should be able to answer,
based on today’s lesson.
You will ask your questions to the rest of the class
in a minute, so be sure to have them ready?
