Barden believed Terzaghi's theory was overly simplified because it assumed soil behaves linearly elastic when it is not always elastic in nature. Terzaghi also could not explain secondary deformation from pore water pressure dissipation. The main parameters Terzaghi described that Barden disagreed with were: (1) the value of c used to predict pore pressure dissipation often did not match measurements, (2) no consideration of secondary deformation or creep after pore pressure dissipates, and (3) no consideration of thickness and pressure increment ratios which affect secondary deformation. Both Terzaghi and Taylor saw secondary compression as caused by primary compression disturbing soil structure, but Terzaghi viewed soil as elastic while Taylor viewed it as viscoelastic, replacing
