1. Summary
ABC soil test and Construction Pvt Ltd is serving on soil investigation and problems related
to the soil characteristics. The purpose of this proposal is to find the nature of swelling clay
near TIA and anticipated end result of the project is to reconstruct the damaged structure
with FOS more than 1.
We seek support financially and a letter requesting for the X-Ray test in NAST. The total
anticipated budget will be around Rs. 250,000.
2
2. Introduction
ABC soil test and Construction Pvt Ltd is established in 2070 BS with the main aim to aid in
the field of Geology. Situated in Kirtipur , it serves for lab test of soil and rock samples.
Moreover we also provide the construction work with greater safety analyzing the ground
condition.
We target to give service around the valley. We have sound feedback regarding our work.
Mostly our work include:-
 Classification of soil
 Classification of Rock grade
 Triaxial test
 CBR test
 ACV test
 AIV test
 Slake Durbility test
 Consolidation test
 Atterberg limit test
 Classification of Aggregates
 Ring Shear test
 Construction works etc…

3. Background
Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal. Many have intuitive knowledge that Kathmandu Valley
has unconsolidated fine sediments but negligible amount of people have studied about the nature
and properties of the soil. The Valley sediments is fluvio lacustrine deposit. Many geoscientist
have studied about the nature of Kathmandu soil which comprises mainly black clay in
the central part of valley.
Historically the valley was an ancient big lake. The weathered rocks along with the
decaying plants and organism settled on the bed rock in different layers over long period of
time to form the soil deposits with organic matters. Soil investigation reports from different
construction projects in the Kathmandu valley reveal that the majority of the particles of the
soil deposits in the different parts of the valley are sand and clay with organic content. The
majority of the soil deposit in the western and southern part of the valley is clay. This organic
soil in different part of valley was found at different depth and in different thickness. The clay
possess typical characteristics of organic soil such as dark color, low density, low
permeability, high water content low shear strength high attergberg limit, low specific gravity
and high compressibility.
In the periphery of Tribhuwan International airport, the swelling clay has created a
problematic situation. The whole landmass is in the state of creep , damaging the infrastructure
including the road structure. The soil characteristic should be studied in detail with laboratory
works which can highlight the real scenario of the ground.
4. Needs/Problems
People around the valley are facing problem due to creep of Road and collapse of structure
due to the nature of soil and poor investigation. Yearly lot of budget is used up but in vain.
The typical characteristic of clay, shrinking and swelling phenomena is mainly responsible
for the failure. For this we have to study the clay fraction in the soil and its main clay
mineralogy. Lack of geological knowledge will cause great loss to the society as well.
The damage in the road structure has caused serious traffic problem in front of the main
International airport. Thousands of public suffer daily by the problem . So it is a must to get
its permanent solution.
4
5. Goals/Objectives
The major objectives of the proposed work are listed below:
1. To have a comparative study of the soil consistency inside the periphery region..
1. Analysis of soil Activity of Clay near TIA.
2. To study the percent of clay fines in the area and to study its effect.
3. To find the clay mineralogy, this is mainly responsible for shrinking and swelling
phenomena.
4. Reconstruction of the damaged road structure with FOS greater than 1.
6. Procedures/Scope of Work
The end result of the project will be, we will be achieving the following goals.
1) Identification of the Clay responsible for swelling and creep by X-Ray diffraction and using
atterberg limits.
2) Remedial measure for the problematic situation near TIA road.
3) Reconstruction of The road structure with Factor of safety(FOS) greater than 1
The phases of the work undertaken will be
6.1.Field work
Our field work includes collection of the disturbed sample from the possible areas. The soil
sample will be taken from almost similar depth range,(2-4m from the surface). Nearly 25
samples from the site will be observed in detail to analyze the whole geology .
6.2.Lab work
With a great care the sample is carried to the lab and test will be done accordingly.
The consistency of the soil can be determined using Casagrande apparatus. The percentage of
fines can be found out by hydrometric analysis. X-ray diffraction is done to find the
activity of fines.
5
6.3. Population and sample
Population sampling is the process of taking a subset of subjects that is representative of
entire population. The probability sampling techniques used for qualitative studies are
rarely appropriate when conducting qualitative research. So in the field sampling of soil is
done according to the limitation of time, money and effort. A representative sample of
contemporary deposit with same shape and size will be taken from a study area by making
a grid.
6.4.Data collection and Tool analysis
Data will be collected by directly through the field study, experimental works and lab results.
During the field work special attention will be given to the study of natural water content and
percent of clay fines of the soil and the impact due to the clay fraction in the soil relating it to
the activity of the soil. For the identification of clay mineralogy samples will be sent to NAST.
After all the outcomes of the laboratory works then , appropriate remedial measure for
swelling clay will be analyzed. And accordingly reconstruction work will be carried out.
