INTRODUCTION
Spatial data: Spatial data is also known as geospatial data or
geographic information it is the data or information that identifies
the geographic location of features and boundaries on Earth, such as
natural or constructed features.
FEATURES OF SPATIAL DATA:
Geometric and varied
Naturally high dimensional
Can be either discrete or continuous
SPATIAL DATABASE
A spatial database is a database that is optimized to store and query
data that represents objects defined in a geometric space. Most spatial
databases allow representing simple geometric objects such as points,
lines, and polygons. Some spatial databases handle more complex
structures such as 3D objects, topological coverage’s and linear
networks.
Roads are represented as Lines
Mail Boxes are represented as Points
ADVANTAGES OF SPATIAL DATABASE:
1.transactions
2. security/access control
3. Concurrent users
4. Database replication
5. Reduced program maintenance
DISADVANTAGES OF SPATIAL
DATABASE:
1. Complex, difficult to design.
2. Initial training for users.
3. Suitable hardware.
4. Conversion costs.
6. Slower than other data structures
APPLICATIONS OF SPATIAL DATABASE:
Many important applications domains have spatial data and queries. Some
examples follow:
1. Army Field Commander.
2.Insurance Risk Manager.
3.Medical Doctor.
CONCLUSION
1.SDBMS is valuable to many important applications
2.SDBMS is a software module
works with an underlying DBMS
provides spatial ADTs callable from a query language
provides methods for efficient processing of spatial queries
3.Components of SDBMS include
spatial data model, spatial data types and operators,
spatial query language, processing and optimization
spatial data mining
4.SDBMS is used to store, query and share spatial data for GIS as well as other applications
