Stanford Design Thinking Action Lab:
Empathize and Define Assignment
Peter Lowe
8/5/13
Say
• “I felt pretty prepared”
• “I wish they had mentioned monster, etc because it exposes you to so many more jobs –
there weren’t that many companies on the vault (Lafayette college job searching tool)”
• “I didn’t use too many of the other resources because the prospects were better than just
throwing a dart somewhere”
• “I would finish my hw and then just wanted to play, I said f*** that to looking for jobs
because I’m in college”
• “I wasn’t that enthused so it was gay”
• “it was good when companies would come and give talks- it got me excited about working
and made me think it might not suck. Exxon Mobil made me particularly excited”
• “I wasn’t too concerned, but my girlfriend was. The idea of graduating, going home and
looking wasn’t scary- I didn’t feel a burning need for a job straight out of college”
• “The way it went down was there was the fall career fair, I dropped off some resumes
there, I got a phone and onsite interview from that (onsite with XXX for a post graduate
internship in quality dept). There was a big drop in communication, then like 2 months
before graduation they said that internship wasn’t going to happen. Then like 2 weeks
before graduation they said there was a position in another department and I said hell
yeah”
Do
• From observation: Didn’t actively pursue
jobs and outside career fairs in college.
Didn’t have much interest in seeking
other employment after the planned
internship period passed and the
company didn’t hire him full time- stayed
on as an intern for a full year with
sporadic searching outside.
Think & Feel
• “There aren’t really super awesome jobs out
there. Even if there are, it’s not worth the
effort to try and get them, I may as well just
stay where I am”
• “I would just rather save my energy and enjoy
my free time than get all wound up trying to
improve my career. It will be fine.”
Problem Statement
Chas, an extremely bright and capable but somewhat disengaged
and unmotivated recent engineering graduate, who has exceptional
ability to deliver under tight deadlines and intense pressure
NEEDS A WAY TO
Better understand and engage with different career options and
understand the excitement and importance of what he can
contribute professionally so that he is motivated to take a more
active role in getting better employment/shaping his career
BECAUSE
He isn’t performing at the level of his ability and doesn’t place much
emphasis on his job; he appears to lack direction
