Earthquakes occur along faults when built-up elastic stress is suddenly released. Sensitive instruments around the world record seismic waves from earthquakes, which are used to determine the focus and epicenter. The epicenter is the point on the surface directly above the focus. Magnitude scales such as the Richter scale are used to measure earthquake size based on wave amplitude. Seismographs can also detect other seismic events like explosions, which have distinguishing seismic fingerprints that can be used for forensic analysis.
