This study guide provides students with information and test preparation materials for an upcoming test on the novel Unwind. It reviews key vocabulary terms, grammar rules for citations, and important characters from the book. It also previews topics that will be covered in a multiple choice section, including quotes and events from the story. Students are encouraged to review their notes and can prepare an essay in advance analyzing a passage about how conflicts evolve from issues into hatred between sides.

- 1. Study Guide This study guide will take you through all of the different parts of tomorrow’s test and give you some inside information about how to be the most successful!
- 2. I. Vocabulary – Here are the words I will use on the test tomorrow: Your Two New Words •Infallible •Ubiquitous So Ms. Lemoine…what do these words Review Words mean? Definitions should be in your notes. Otherwise, there’s •flummox this thing…called a dictionary! •assuage •diminutive

Grammar and Test Prep - Review Bibliographic Entries Direct Quotations with parenthetical citations Paraphrasing with parenthetical citations Title Rules – quotation marks vs. underlining Which source would I use? Look over your notes and the practice we did today. You will have a model on the test tomorrow – just follow it. Remember you want Author’s Last name and page number, but you don’t always have that information!

- 5. III. Unwind There will be a multiple choice section featuring some of the topics from our game and you will have to select the answer that best captures the significance of that topic. The topics from our Say Something Intelligent Showdown along with some study topics from Chapter 34 are featured on the following slides.

- 8. III. Unwind Essay: Consider the passage below from page 223. In your MULTI-PARAGRAPH essay • Set up the context by telling me who is saying this and why he is sharing this information (1 paragraph) • Analyze the significance of his words. What does he mean? (1 paragraph) • Prove that you truly understand what he is trying to say by applying it to something from real life. (1 paragraph) “You see, a conflict always begins with an issue—a difference of opinion, an argument. But by the time it turns into a war, the issue doesn’t matter anymore, because now it’s about one thing and one thing only: how much each side hates each other” “…and everyone was selecting their leaders not by their ability to lead, but by where they stood on this single issue.” Hey! - 9. Want to prepare your essay ahead of time? Type your essay, print it out, and bring it to class. You can staple it to your test instead of completing the essay on your test. MLA • Typed Title Here heading • 12-point font • MLA Heading at the top right Paragraph One • Give your essay an appropriate title (Not Paragraph Two “UNWIND ESSAY”) • 1 page double spaced (at least 3 paragraphs Paragraph Three like it says in the writing prompt) Must be turned in to me during your class period (not before or after). You can e-mail it to me or send it to me through Schoology if you don’t have a printer (must be send by 7:00am).
