Your brain
How does Brain Work?
The neuron
How many 10 billion neurons
It is immensely powerful – to build a computer with the same capability it would need to be as big as: Canary Wharf
Where do we store inf0? Each single brain neuron has from 1,000 to 10,000 connections with other neurons, making up to 10 trillion neuron connections.

Use it or lose it!!
How much we are using of our brains?? 2-10%
How to increase it?
Recall how much?

Editor's Notes

  • #37: Passive – exerting minimal effort, hear, but don’t comprehend. “Elevator Music” at WalMart Active – focusing, attending, thinking! The same as when you are on a date with someone you are really interested in! Substantial effort is involved! System of Notetaking – key words – 1 st , Note that, You may see this again! Somehow divide information into main, subordinate, details…Try to anticiapate thenext point, ask questions Shorthand eg, w/ w/o, bc/ practice it. Recall column – Handout! Look at how things are divided – Leave recall blank unless you think of a question.
  • #40: You have to work at it! If you don’t have a study plan, you will not perform at your top level.
  • #49: What is cramming? Not an efficient way to study! Reviewing – involves more than rereading notes. Comprehension – memorization – deep thinking Daily – 10 minutes within 24 hours Use recall now for questions, comments, summaries, important points. To add in what you forgot to write.
  • #50: Weekly May need to review more than one weeks material depending on length of time between tests. Keep it current in mind. Very Important – KEY to studying for exams! Most is already done! You should only have to work on difficult concepts the night before a test, maybe memorize a few terms, but not reread the textbook or memorize your notes.
  • #52: Reading Instructions: how many questions do you need to answer? What are the point values Is there a penalty for wrong answers Where do I write the answers? General Content Determine the general topics. What is easier? What is the format and point values? Time Look at the point values. Spent more time on the questions that are worth more Easy Questions First Boosts confidence Activates memory and triggers recall of more information Don’t waste time guessing at questions unless to have already answered all the questions you can. NEATNESS Studies have shown a neat answer gets higher marks than a messy one. It gives the impression you care what you are writing about. PACE: It’s not a race – there are no rewards for finishing first and no penalties for finishing last.
  • #59: Highlight as little as possible. This is for short-term memory support key operative words (eligible content words) odd words that they might recall again when they see them in the passage such as the name Sara Jackson Milford. Locations (in the 3 rd paragraph, at the end of the story, etc) Suggested Instructional Methods : You may wish to do this as a whole group or model a few then let students work independently, pair share and share with whole class discussion
  • #66: Overview of study techniques. Beginning of semester – Great time to get a fresh start with your study habits! If time – Questions?
