I may not make it to the moon… … but I’ll keep on trying – or, How technology commoditization will help you achieve great things cheap Hugo José Pinto [email_address] Twitter: @hugojpinto
I grew up a strange kid…
… reading a strange kind of books…
… imagining I’d play a part in this… d
… well, guess what? … we’re already in 2010! Where are the hover cars, the house robots, and the flashy spaceships cruising the skies? That is a future that never was … economics kicked in :) Plus, we’re in the middle of a deep economic crisis that will make sure this won’t happen anytime soon I’m 33, so I’m guessing I’m probably not going to be landing on a lunar base anytime in my lifetime
Why am I here? Seems I’m one of those entrepre… dreamers Still, I managed to get myself on a wavy path: Programming during my teens.. BIG ideas about founding this vast empire Taking Computer Engineering at university Corporate Programming during my 20’s… Then, Management… … I had lost my path!
Rebooting – Back to the dream Co-started Inovaworks in 2006 The idea for Inovaworks was actually simple: Let’s do fun technology-centric stuff that has immediate business value and sell it We created a piece of software that would dump domain-dependent “new combinatory ideas” in large numbers Focused on few areas we knew well: Mobile, Lifestyle, Interactive Media
We do from mobile apps and casual games…
… to hardware-based concepts…
… all done cheap(ish). We realized that magic-enabling technology has become dramatically cheap(er): Displays, Comms, CPU (duh!), even Manufacturing Open standards and systems make it easy to exchange knowledge and use off-the-shelf stuff Globalization puts you side-by-side with a manufacturer at alibaba.com So this also means that unless you’re doing fundamental tech research…
… you need to actually DO stuff! Tech ideas per se have little market value HOW to correctly use technology becomes key to the product’s success (ex: iPhone vs. World) Non-fundamental (combinatory) innovation is hard to patent and harder to protect, so.. Build a prototype, social market the hell of it… …and get it bootstrapped, or financed!
We’ve been recently exploring AAA 3D as a new enabler – both for business and fun Real-time 3D game engines have been maturing The cost of developing AA+ interactive media decreased dramatically – thus an opportunity! We have some small projects on the way… (demo) Closing: Interactive 3D and Simulations
What about that Space thing? Space Travel’s main inhibitor is obviously cost And the chemicals needed to traditionally lift you up to space are not getting any cheaper Space Elevators / Space Loops are decades away … Bummer! So, ok. I’m not going to Space. Can I fake it? Computer imagery, as seen, is really catching up
No Hover Cars, but… One technology DID pretty much like foreseen in the futurama form the 60’s and 70’s
No Hover Cars, but… One technology DID pretty much like foreseen in the futurama form the 60’s and 70’s
It’s not quite real Space, but… it seems like we may all be going there :)
Thank you! … and remember that if you have great ideas, commoditized technologies are making it cheap for you to market them! Hugo José Pinto [email_address] Twitter: @hugojpinto
