PREREQUISITES: Chemistry: Biology Honors Chemistry: 87% or higher in Biology & 87% or higher in Algebra II recommended ! THIS IS A QUALITY CORE END-OF-COURSE CLASS. (Final exam is developed by Quality Core, like the Biology final exam, and is weighted 10% of your overall grade.) ! The content, practices, and cross-cutting concepts covered in this class are based on the Quality Core (ACT) Chemistry Standards as well as the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) ! - 2. 3 Essential Questions You Will Investigate: ! 1. How do we view matter? 2. How does matter behave? 3. What is the role of energy in the changes we observe? ! You will be engaged in both science and engineering practices throughout the school year. The primary goal of this class is that you become a “critical consumer” of science. ! Grading: Assessments: 60% Possible Forms of Assessment: • Exit slips/Google forms • Short quizzes (announced or not) • Videos • Performance task (build a model, demonstrate a skill, etc.) • Thinking Questions (Constructed Response, for example) • Writing tasks • Verbal assessments(Questioning during labs/activities) • Presentations • Blog posts • e-Portfolio • Self-assessments/Group assessments • Unit Tests • Mid-term Test ! Investigations: 40% • Lab skills • Planning and carrying out investigations • Any type of assessment mentioned above relating to an investigation specifically ! NOTE: Not every activity, assignment, etc. that you do will be graded. Some activities and worksheets are to support your learning, to absorb the material, and to practice.
- 3. ! Materials Needed: ! • 3 in. Binder with loose leaf paper • Composition Notebook • Scientific calculator • Pen/Pencil ! Daily Expectations/Procedures: BIGGEST EXPECTATION: IN HERE, YOUR JOB IS TO THINK AND ACT LIKE A SCIENTIST- - 1. Once the bell rings, you are expected to be in your seat, ready to think! 2. Everyone must stay in their assigned seats until told to do otherwise. 3. ALWAYS be respectful of everyone. 4. Keep the room clean. 5. All daily work should be turned in to the designated area in the classroom. If in doubt if something should be turned in, put it in there! 6. Consult the class website for make-up assignments, and to know what you missed that day. 7. Make-up work should be placed in the designated area in the classroom. 8. Gradesheets should be placed by my computer at the beginning of class so that I can fill them out while doing attendance. 9. If absent, you have as many days as you missed (excused) to make up work. I will not accept any work after the date that I have graded and handed it back to the class. If needed, an alternate assignment can be given. 10. Quizzes, unit tests and investigations will have to be made up after school or during JAM. 11. It is expected that you keep up with your work-there is no “doing it all right before grades are due”. !
