Taking Notes in the Class Transitioning to a Better Future
Why is Note Taking Important? The average person forgets at least half (50%) or what he or she hears within 24 hours. Note taking is an active approach to learning.
Taking Notes Taking notes makes you personally involved in the learning process. It changes information that you have only heard into ideas you have actively worked with, seen, and thought about.
The “ACT” of Taking Notes The act of taking notes is an organizational tool. The act of taking notes is also a form of studying.
When Taking Notes If allowed, choose your seat wisely.  Sit away from distractions and as close to the front as possible. Begin active listening from the beginning of class. Listen and watch for announcements and instructions by your teacher.
Full Attention Five your full attention to the speaker.  Maintain good eye contact. Be responsive when the teacher asks questions or asks for comments. Listen for the main points. Ask for points of clarification.
When Taking Notes… Be attentive… Begin taking notes immediately Be concise Summarize. Do not attempt to write down every word. Use abbreviations (u.s.a., avg. ea., vs., @, #  etc.)
When Taking Notes Part Two.. Be smart… Always copy down what the teacher puts on the board or in a PowerPoint. Re-copy your notes as soon as possible.  This will enable you to review your notes and make sense of what the teacher had said.  It also enables you to fill in blanks and clear up any missing or misunderstood information.
Something to Consider Some distractions, like outside noise or the temperature of a room, may be out of your control.  But other things like staying up late, not eating breakfast or lunch are with your power to change.
