Task 1
Hannah McDonagh and Laura Hodgson
Funding- BBC
BBC’s largest donor in 2015-16 was the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID). It supports
them through a five-year ‘Global Grant’ to produce media and communication outputs that contribute to
better governance, healthier populations and an increased ability to cope with humanitarian crises. Their
programmes funded by the Global Grant in 2015-16 reached an estimated 143.8 million people (78.5 million
in governance, 11.4 million in resilience and humanitarian response, and 53.9 million in health).
Other significant donors were the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, several UN agencies, the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation, and US government funding through USAID, OFDA and the Department of
State among others. Hannah
Funding - Disney
Laura
The funders of Disney are, shareholders as they are the people that own at least
one share o a companies stock and as they are the owners of the company they
get any benefit of the company’s successes in the form of more stock validation. An
example of a shareholder is Robert.A. Iger.
Another fund are the merchandise for example if a new disney princess is released
merchandise like toys, magazines, lunch boxes etc will also be released for
promotion of the new character and also include disney as well to credit them.
One more fund that will make Disney’s company the most money is tv programmes
and channels for example ‘Disney Channel’ and from all the views and depending
on how successful the shows are Disney will receive money from this.
Synergy - BBC
One example of synergy that BBC uses is spins-off because they had a popular tv show called doctor who.
Torchwood, The Sarah Jane adventures and the doctor who extra.
Synergy can bring more audience and therefore bring in more money.
One of the most popular brands is Doctor Who. Doctor Who started as a television programme and during
the TV show a comic book was released and a movie was also released shortly after. Once these became
popular the BBC decided to sell products like Tshirts, lunchboxes and toys to become more popular and
become worldwide, this would then boost the amount of money the BBC were making.
Hannah
Synergy- Disney
Laura
This is the release of brands across different platforms. Synergy is used to increase
brand image and also to expand their target audience.
Media institutions use synergistic techniques for example Walt Disney created
Steam-Boat-Willy (which later became Mickey Mouse) in 1932. In order to make
money from his creation he gave a license for other companies to make lunch
boxes and t-shirts making it popular and making Disney money.
Walt Disney was the first person to use synergy to our knowledge.
Subsidiaries - BBC
Subsidiaries are smaller companies that are controlled by a larger one.
BBC have many different ones, these include BBC News, CBBC, CBeebies and
many more.
BBC is a worldwide well known company, the reason this is worldwide is in order
for them to make more money and make them more well known. The more
branches they make e.g. CBeebies and BBc news, the more well known they will
be, the BBC are there for everyone rather than one type of people. They get many
views from across the whole world which maximise their profits largely.

Disney’s largest shareholder at that time.
Marvel is a company wholly owned subsidiary of Walt Disney’s company and is mainly known
for it’s Marvel comics, animations and television units. In 2009 The Walt Disney Company go
the Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion and since then it has been a limited liability company.
For financial reporting purposes Marvel is said to be a part of Disney’s primary consumer
products segment.
Products and services - BBC
The product is what the audience consume and services are the platform is used to deliver the product.
Services
The BBC offers twenty-five public services in the UK. There are eight television channels, sixteen radio stations and an online/red button interactive
service.
The Trust governs each UK public service using a published service licence. The Trust is required to assess the performance of services and to
consider any proposals from the BBC Executive for new services or changes to services. A published protocol sets out our duties and how we carry
these out. We publish a summary of our work each year in the Annual Report.
The Trust must review each of the public services every five years and it publishes its findings and the evidence used to reach these.
All BBC programmes and services are required to comply with BBC editorial guideline.
The Executive is responsible for operating the BBC’s services and for making day to day decisions regarding their schedules and programmes. Each
year the Executive publishes a statement of programme policy for each service setting out the plans for the year ahead.
Hannah
