Task 10 Proposal Form

Title of the Magazine

I intent to call my magazine reverbas it a short and simple word. It is technical jargon, and in the
semantic field of music. Reverb refers the sound carrying on after it has been played and this
reflects the concept of my magazine that after the gigs, concerts and gossip has happened my
magazine will report it.

Choice of Genre

I chose the indie genre as I already have previous knowledge within the genre. Indie music is my
preferred style of music and I listen to a lot of indie bands so I have a reasonable amount of
background knowledge and have a keen interest in the subject. This knowledge will be very valuable
as I know what to expect of a music magazine and I have new and interesting ideas.

Target Audience

The stereotypical audience for an indie magazine of the kind would be teenage boys, primarily
students, aged 16 – 19. However I intent to challenge this convention by targeting not only at males
but females. To achieve this I will mention female artists as well and possibly include a small section
on the clothes associated with the indie genre. I will also use a generically good looking artist on the
front cover in an attempt to attract this audience.

Initial Ideas for the Front Cover

For my front cover I am planning to use a medium close up shot of an artist or potentially a wide
shot of a band. My masthead will be in either black or red text, as I am using the colours red, white
and black for my colour scheme. The mast head with run across the width of the page, in the top
third. My pull quote will by placed over the image of the artist and then all my cover lines will be in
a horse shoe shape around the page. All of the text will be black, white or red.

Initial Ideas for My Contents Page

On my contents page I want to include several of the main articles and features in the magazine. I
will also include an editor’s note to make it feel more personal and to address the readers directly. I
may also include a small ‘under the radar’ section mentioning new and upcoming artists/bands. The
contents page will most probably include several images one of which will be the ‘image of the
week’ and it will be a live shot of a gig taken and sent in by one of the readers. The colour scheme
will remain the same and will use black, red and white font.

Initial Ideas for My Double Page Spread

My double page spread will be made up of one page being entirely image based with one image of
the band/artist used on the cover. The other page will be an interview with the artist, it will be fairly
informal to make it feel more personal. There will be one or two quotes from the interview in larger,
different coloured font. There will be a small amount of background information on the artist/band
before the beginning of the article. I will use a drop caps at the start of the article and also again
use the same colour scheme.
Initial Ideas for Photographs

For the front cover I will most likely use a medium close up image of a band member will his band
mates stood in the background. I could also potentially use a wide shot image of the whole band
however this may be more difficult and make the page look cluttered. I will also have an image
taken and sent in by a reader on the contents page to forge that connection with the audience.
There will be an image of the ‘under the radar’ band on the contents page as well. On one half of
double page spread there will be one large image of the band in a more relaxed environment, e.g
sitting on a wall or on a sofa. I may use images of gigs on the contents page as it will look more like a
music magazine.
