Editor's Notes

  • #2: Image taken from Google Images search – also found on http://www.coolmath4kids.com/addition/images/addition02-03.gifBackground image for all slides found at: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q9PMeRHWrbQ/UJ95qKdbFXI/AAAAAAAAKzw/_s8u9hD9GYA/s1600/pencil.png
  • #3: * All images included in presentation were obtained by using the “Snipping Tool” for Windows unless otherwise specified with a citation in the notes section on the slide containing the image.
  • #4: Because students learn differently than their peers, incorporating technology can be beneficial to students when it comes to mathematical concepts.Hands on activities, such as games, as well as various visual aids available online can give students a more clarified and better understanding of concepts being taught throughout elementary school. Different forms of technology (websites, games, etc) can aid in the learning of children, especially in terms of difficult topics such as math. This presentation will show you how teachers can integrate blogs, videos, YouTube clips, worksheets individually created by the teacher, and interactive websites into their classrooms to benefit students while not only teaching them academic skills, but also 21st century skills at the same time.
  • #5: YouTube image: http://www.youtube.comSlideshare image: http://www.slideshare.com
  • #6: Pinterest is a tool used by many teachers as a resource for lessons, games, and other various ideas when it comes to teaching topics. By doing a simple search for either pins or boards pertaining to the topic that is being taught, hundreds of links appear that can potentially be used in the classroom. Not only can lessons be found, but supplemental worksheets in addition to various ideas for games and visual aids can also be located and be beneficial in the classroom environment. http://www.pinterest.com/search/boards/?q=first%20grade%20addition%20and%20subtractionhttp://www.pinterest.com/search/boards/?q=first%20grade%20addition%20and%20subtraction
  • #7: Image retrieved from http://ed101.bu.edu/StudentDoc/Archives/ED101sp08/mshea7/addition.jpg (Google Image Search)
  • #8: Kids.gov is a government based website that contains many different categories that can help children of different age groups learn about educational topics. By clicking the math category, students or teachers are presented with different links including ones that have to do with addition and subtraction in the primary grades.
  • #9: Although this corporation is based in the United Kingdom, it still features links to activities, news articles, and video clips that have to do with addition and subtraction. By exposing children to as many different activities and perspectives as possible, they can potentially achieve more in math and other subjects than if they are only exposed to a topic in one specific way.
  • #10: The Federal Registry for Educational Excellence was designed to help teachers discover online resources pertaining to various academic subjects. It is separated by academic categories as well as multistate standards. Teachers can click whatever subject they need resources for, in this case math, and are then brought to a variety of links connected to that subject. There are various links on the website related to addition and subtraction for elementary school students.
  • #11: This could be useful because Nicki Newton gives great advice for teaching kids about money. Many of her ideas could be integrated into a lesson. She had taught not only elementary school, but middle school and graduate school as well. She is a reliablesource because of her background in teaching. This site is useful for both parents and teachers. http://guidedmath.wordpress.com/
  • #12: Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuX7nPBqDtsImage: http://playrific.com/images/media/khanacademy_addition_basic_youtube.pngThis is an instructional video by Khan Academy that features an introduction to basic addition. This can be helpful because it provides students a visual as well as step by step instruction on how to complete addition problems.
  • #13: Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNqG4ChKShIImage: obtained from YouTube using the Mac Snipping ToolThis is an instructional video by Khan Academy that features an introduction to basic subtraction. This can be helpful because it provides students a visual as well as step by step instruction on how to complete addition problems.
  • #14: Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feRV7t5djwYThis video is beneficial for students in Kindergarten and Grade One because it is a catchy song to help remind them of when it’s appropriate to use either addition or subtraction. I like the idea of the video for kindergarten especially because it can be used as a movement break, a time where children get the chance to be silly and get all their wiggles out so that they can focus more effectively on their schoolwork.
  • #15: This is a virtual subtraction activity on Kidspiration. Students are required to drag a certain amount of apples to the basket and fill in the subtraction equation based on how many apples they removed and how many are remaining. This could be used aurings an introductory lesson to subtraction. A teacher can explain subtraction to students, and then have them come up to the Smartboard to complete the subtraction problems and determine the correct equation. This visual enhances student understanding of the topic because it connects to a real life example of when a child may need to use subtraction – while apple picking. Additionally, this activity could be easily differentiated if the teacher changes the number of apples on each tree depending on the various academic levels of her students.
  • #16: Link to the Splash Math Website: https://www.splashmath.com/math-skills/first-grade (Can also be accessed by clicking the image on the slide)
  • #17: Worksheet from http://www.math-salamanders.com/addition-and-subtraction-worksheets.html
  • #18: This website has 13 different short stories with silly images used to help children learn addition and subtraction. Although the image on the slide shows an example of one of the subtraction stories, it also includes addition as well. I think that this is an effective teaching material because it makes learning math, something that so many students struggle with, a little bit more laid back and silly, so it could potentially help children become more comfortable with basic mathematical concepts.
  • #19: http://www.worksheetworks.com/math/basic-operations/addition-search.htmlThis is a math problem search creator I found on the internet. It is found at http://www.worksheetworks.com/math/basic-operations/addition-search.html. The teacher is able to determine the parameters of the math problem search in order to differentiate among different leveled students in the classroom. Although it may be tricky for some students when they are first learning the concepts of addition and subtraction, it’s definitely a great activity to expand their thinking when it comes to addition and subtraction problems.
  • #20: http://www.worksheetworks.com/math/basic-operations/addition-search.html
  • #21: http://nlvm.usu.edu/The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives is a great Subject Specific Internet Based resource because it is separated into different grades as well as content areas. Therefore, as a teacher, you can always find appropriate activities for the students within your classroom. The website allows them to get interactive and incorporates the use of technology in the classroom when it comes to mathematics.
  • #22: http://illuminations.nctm.org/Default.aspxThe blue Illuminations logo can be clicked to access the default page of Illuminations. By clicking the image showing examples of games, the viewer will be brought to the site that came up as a result of an addition and subtraction search for grades K-2.This is an incredibly useful source because it is not only interactive for students, but it also features lessons for teachers. By implementing both the lessons and interactive feature of Illuminations, students can potentially grasp a better understanding of many different mathematical concepts.
  • #23: http://www.aplusmath.com/This website is a great resource for both teachers and students. Teachers can create worksheets related to addition and subtraction to do in class, assign for homework, or even have children solve online! It also features games, such as Hidden Picture, where students must correctly solve addition and/or subtraction problems in order to uncover a hidden image. Additionally, students can use this website to access virtual flashcards for addition and subtraction.
