Tech Trends - a Pluralsight presentation for LT16

Editor's Notes

  • #5: I started our as an individual who was told that computers were not something that would be possible for me as I was not in the top class of Maths, when I was at school. When I told my parents they were mortified that I was being hindered from pursuing something that would be so critical to my future. So my Dad went out and got me a Commadore64 which allowed me to learn programming. My fist programme was a bank reconciliation programme that I put an Easter Egg in so that when my Dad put his bank statements in he could see where he was financially but if he put a cheque through for my Mum it came up as ‘Overdrawn’ I obviously thought it was funny but soon recognised that he didn’t. Over the years I have put myself through school and training and have headed up various teams and departments in the Learning and Technology field, culminating in heading up a new team at the Houses of Parliament as Online Services Manager. Today I work for one of the best Online education companies in the world, Pluralsight, where we help people learn all the technology they want to be better and smarter than yesterday.
  • #6: Speaker notes: Our mission is to democratise professional technology learning At Pluralsight, we are truly obsessed with learning, and we believe everyone should have the opportunity to learn the most in-demand skills. We teach over 1 million learners in 150+ countries. We help businesses solve their biggest challenges and address your most-critical skills gaps. But how did we get here? ……(transition)
  • #7: Speaker notes: To talk about Pluralsight as it is today, it’s good to know a little bit about how we started. In 2004, Pluralsight was founded as classroom-based training, but over time, we recognized Instructor Led Training had its limits. In 2008, we moved our library completely online to address the global demands for tech learning and made it available for members whenever and wherever they needed it. As we did this, the consumption of our content increased dramatically, and has done so ever since. We’ve also made some key content and product acquisitions to continue growing out learning solutions. The line on this slide shows an increase in courses viewed by our subscribers as the library grew. We’ve acquired companies who have allowed us to extend our content breadth (like IT, OpenSource, Creative, Engineering) or enhance our technology to provide a more powerful learning experience (Assessments, In-browser coding, Learning Paths, Mentoring). This growth and an obsession over providing the most powerful learning experience has helped us become an industry leader……(transition) -------------------------- Peepcode and Tekpub - Open source training resources TrainSignal – an IT- focused training resource that is now home to our Chicago office Digital-Tutors – a creative-focused training resource, from 3D animation to web design, that is now home to our Oklahoma City Office We also added industry-leading assessment technology through our Smarterer acquisition and on-demand mentoring technology through HackHands. Both of these features are being integrated into the platform, which I’ll talk about shorlty. Code School was one of our more recent content acquisitions. It offers training for both existing and aspiring developers, and uses in-browser coding challenges to teach topics like Ruby, JavaScript and HTML. --------------------------
  • #8: Speaker notes: …The trusted learning provider for companies across the globe and across industries. These are just a few of the Fortune 100 and industry leading organizations we work with today. Others include…….(transition)
  • #9: Speaker notes: A huge part of why so many people learn with Pluralsight is the quality of our author network. We have over 800 authors who are industry experts, tech and creative leaders and many of whom are certified masters of their skills. Our authors create around 80 courses and over 250 hours of training a month while working in the industry, teaching and speaking, or working full-time for us. Our royalty model assures we can attract and keep top talent. The authors are motivated to continue to produce high quality content because the more the course gets viewed, the more they earn. Our subscribers are the beneficiaries as they get to learn only from the industries best. So how have we taken all of this amazing content and organized it?.......(transition)
  • #10: Speaker notes: Our training is focused on leading technology professions and skills. Software development IT Ops Creative Business or professional development that supports technical skills and employee personal growth Data Architecture and Construction Manufacturing and Design This focus on critical technology skills provides your organization with an immense learning resource, with content that is broad, deep, and relevant….(transition)
  • #12: To get a sense of what to expect in 2016 we talked to our customers, Authors and our own internal experts to gain some valuable insight into what your teams will need to know for Developers and IT Professionals. We did this through surveys and conversations across many countries and industry sectors transition
  • #13: When we look at the Dev trends across the market we are seeing AR, Security and Client side framworks top the bill. Microsoft launches Hololens Development Edition in the next few months or so and it wont take companies long how to use this technology in innovative ways. It will be open season too with the occulus rift and project Morpheus so developers will need to get the latest learning to make full advantage of it. With the number of Security attacks in the news, the Ashley Maddison, the HSBC hack at the weekend on the Online Banking and yesterday BT broadband was down yesterday due to a hack companies are getting more savvy on understanding and learning about security. Pluralsight has the advantage of having 2 of the top experts in that arena Dale Meredith and Troy Hunt. This is a huge focus for developers and CIOS / CTOs globally. Client side frameworks aren’t new, but they are increasing in usage. In 2016 we expect to see more uptake of React.js and the release of Angular 2 will defo heat up the competition. Typescript will be promoted, so a new language to learn so only time will tell if developers will move away from JavaScript.
  • #14: When we talk to Devs and look at the trends of learning within out platform we So, who do you need to hire or train up to keep ahead of the game? Angular.JS – ASP.NET – C# troubleshooting, problem solving however SECURITY is the big ask this year and will be a focus for IT organisations in 2016 The adoption of HTTP/2 will help with security but that will mean finding or teaching developers who are willing to ‘unlearn’ hacks and habits that really wont be needed going forwards. When we surveyed developers within the Pluralsight community their responses were in line with trends we already know about. Security, Mobile Development and the IoT are all in the top 10 subjects devs want to learn. So train people up in these technologies and you will be helping your company move forward
  • #15: When we talk about IT Trends we are looking at areas that are not classified as new but are growing in importance. The network infrastructure isn’t new, but will bring more devices to the enterprise. As the number of devices increases it is more important than ever before that the network infrastructure can cope. Look to focus on the network capabilities of your teams, CLOUD is the big focus here so education on this is essential If one good thing has come out of hacking, it is that we are now more aware than ever about how our data is being stored and used – and how it can potentially be stolen. Fake emails, click here hyperlinks, many people fall foul to this on a day to day basis. General security and information security are high on the priority list for technology training. Organisations need to review their security practises from the lowest user to the highest tech challenge. With multi devices connecting via all means to your network you really need to beef up the education and the teams. So far as skills are concerned,
  • #16: So far as Skills are concerned VMWare, Cisco and PowerShell. This is what our surveyed audience say are their focus in 2016 - but of course we know that the InfoSec field is expecting to expand exponentially with a skills gap of around 1.5mil by 2020. Now is the time to start to build your talent and to educate everyone around you, not only the IT pros but your whole company. We all need to prepare for new releases of everything and that brings skills challenges to every organisation. How quickly you can upskill people to impact your business is a top priority for CTOs and CIOs, Online education gives you many advantages including cost reduction but most importantly you can give your teams instant access to the latest learning in the tech you need. So…
  • #17: So, considerations to all HR & L&D teams is to look at the critical business challenges facing you over the next few years this includes the composition of your teams. Teams need to be not only specialists in their fields but also multiskilled across many fields to ensure that they can make development and the customer both internal and external a priority
  • #18: So, what are we looking at so far as upcoming tech to get your teams upskilled into – here are but a few of the development languages we have found.
