An adverb is a part of s peec h that modifies
a ver b, an adjec tive or another adver b.
A gr eat w ay to pic k out an adver b fr om a
s entenc e is to look for the w or d ending in
"ly". Although that's not univer s ally tr ue,
it's a good plac e to s tar t.
H er e ar e s ome examples of adver bs
modifying ver bs :
• H e r uns quic k ly.
• She walk s s lowly.
Adverbs can also modify adiectives or other
adverbs.
They provide more information about that other
descriptive word.
For example:
• He runs very quickly.
In this sentence, the adverb "very" is describing the
adverb
"quickly" ("very quickly" can be used as an adverb
phrase).
•An incredibly pretty girl sat down next to me.
In this sentence, the adverb "incredibly" is
describing the adjective "pretty."
