Technical drawings have existed for thousands of years, evolving from early cave drawings to modern computer-aided design (CAD) programs. Drawings allow for precise graphical communication in engineering and construction. The industrial revolution increased the need for accurate mechanical drawings of complex machinery. Nothing has had a greater impact on transforming visual-spatial perceptions and designs than computers and the Internet. While modern drafting relies on CAD programs, freehand sketching remains an important foundational skill for visualization and communication of designs, according to experts. Schools should continue teaching technical drawing fundamentals and the art of freehand sketching.
