Technical Textiles Paper presented in Technofest’05 SSM College,Komarapalayam
Abstract High performance textile is a keyword in this world of innovation, modernization, infra structure, development, chemical industry, medical application, automotive industry, irrigation, agriculture & aerospace and many more in the tunnel of application. Indian textile industries have a strong base in expertise manpower caliber, material availability, machinery, equipments, testing, evaluation and processing. India is mainly lagging behind in updating changing trends in terms of Research and Development. By taking up new challenges with right thrust in the area of application, product groups, technology, India is having strong potential to grab a substantial share in the world market of Technical Textiles. With a rapid development in material science, the use of Technical Textiles will only gain momentum in Asia, in India in particular. By switching over to much higher value added Technical Textiles with capability to meet the functional demands for precise application, India will have an important impact in the market of Technical Textiles by the year 2005.
The Fibers The fibers available for the Technical Textiles are classified as follows: Conventional fibers like Natural fibers, Regenerated fibers, Synthetic fibers High strength and high modulus organic fibers High chemical and combustion resistant organic fibers High performance inorganic fibers Ultra fine and novelty fibers
The contribution of high performance textiles in total textiles
HP-Textiles - A Classification 1) Agrotech (Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry) 2) Buildtech (Building and construction) 3) Clothtech (Technical components of shoes and clothing) 4) Geotech (Geo textiles, Civil Engineering) 5) Hometech (Furniture, household textiles, floor coverings components) 6) Indutech (Filtration, cleaning and other industrial) 7) Medtech (Hygiene and medical) 8) Mobiltech (Automobiles, shipping, railways and aerospace) 9) Oekotech (Environmental Protection) 10) Packtech (Packaging) 11) Protech (Personal and property protection) 12) Sporttech (Sport and leisure)

Conclusion Technical Textiles provide opportunities to use textiles in new areas enhancing the market potential. They are going to play important role in the emerging fields like roads, buildings, automobiles, and medical applications, industrial. Domestic consumption of Technical Textiles will grow rapidly due to higher market potential and developing country. India will have the advantage of manufacturing than other countries due to low cost of production. A slight distortion in quality will lead to heavy loss, since there are no second sales, because the material is intended for specific end use. So selection of raw material, process, machines are most important. Innovation, Design, Successful implementation will be the key to success. To get through the critical phase, intense competition both in domestic and international market, quality is most important and in addition product diversification and value added products need to be given adequate thrust by the mills in order to remain competitive in the coming years. Diversification possibilities are innumerable for textiles and new avenues which includes Technical Textiles.
